MIDDLEBURY — Two area nonprofits, a local art gallery and the former “first family” of Middlebury College are teaming up to establish a new charity that will help Addison County better react to future human services crises.

It’s called the “Addison County Funders’ Collaborative for Emerging Needs” and will be managed by the United Way of Addison County (UWAC) and the Vermont Community Foundation (VCF), in recognition of the many philanthropic endeavors of John and Bonnie McCardell.

MIDDLEBURY — On Sunday morning, 570 newly minted Middlebury College graduates threw their mortarboards into the clear blue sky.

By all accounts, the graduates, degrees in hand, were passing on into a very slow economy. They were joining the estimated 1.6 million students in the country graduating this year with a bachelor’s degree. Most of them are looking for jobs.

But signs indicate that the job market, at least in many fields, is picking up, according to Jaye Roseborough, executive director of the college’s career services.

Middlebury public works office to bear name of Cyr

Posted on May 24, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — By all accounts, the late Sonny Cyr would respond to pretty much any call for help at any time of day during his 42-year career with the Middlebury Department of Public Works.

Cyr’s history of dedication and self-sacrifice won him a lot of friends, who mourned the man’s passing this past January at the age of 67. Now those friends, with the hearty endorsement of Middlebury officials, will pay a lasting tribute to Cyr. On Wednesday, May 26, at 3 p.m., Middlebury will officially dedicate the Sonny Cyr Public Works Facility at 1020 Route 7 South.

MIDDLEBURY — Stewards of the Middlebury Community House are trying to boost residents’ awareness of, and investment in, a downtown architectural jewel that is beginning to show signs of wear and tear after almost two centuries of battering from the elements.

Built in 1816 near the Congregational Church of Middlebury at the corner of Main and Seymour streets, the bright yellow Middlebury Community House remains one of the best examples of post-colonial, Federal-style architecture left in town.

Students, artisan bring piece of local history to life

MIDDLEBURY — It’s an image that evokes an earlier time: a solitary Vermonter in a flat-bottomed wooden boat, poling through a flooded marshland and pulling muskrats out of traps.

Though the art of building the fur-trapping boat has been all but lost in the past half-century, last fall Vergennes boat builder Douglas Brooks and Middlebury College students Renee Igo, Christian Woodard and Ben Meader embarked on a journey to rediscover — and recreate — that tradition.

MIDDLEBURY — It was early on a recent Thursday morning when eight people, armed with binoculars and guidebooks, gathered in the parking lot at Otter View Park in Middlebury, ears perked up for morning birdcalls.

MIDDLEBURY — A consultant and a local biomass study committee will look at the feasibility of carving Middlebury into five separate energy districts, with the concept of endowing each with a communal woodchip heating plant.

The study group, with the aid of a consultant and a combined total of $250,000 in state and federal funding, has been working since last year to see if Middlebury has the potential to establish one or more biomass plants to provide a cost-effective, renewable energy alternative for local businesses that now rely on imported fossil fuels for heating.
