Middlebury selectboard cites reasons for supporting pipeline

Editor’s note: The Middlebury selectboard considered and endorsed this letter, drafted by Selectmen Dean George and Victor Nuovo, endorsing a proposed natural gas pipeline.

On May 14, 2013, the Middlebury Select Board authorized the following statement clarifying the Board’s position on the Vermont Gas Pipeline and its impact on Middlebury by a vote of 6 in favor (George, Nuovo, Artim, Bingham, Baker, Forbes) and 1 opposed (Shashok).

Middlebury to update its zoning

MIDDLEBURY — One would think that Middlebury Planning Commission members could rest a little after spending the past three years updating the community’s comprehensive town plan. But the panel is now turning its attention to another, complementary task: ensuring that Middlebury’s zoning laws dovetail with the principles laid out in the town plan.

Middlebury selectmen endorse natural gas pipeline

MIDDLEBURY — A majority of the Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday threw its enthusiastic support behind the proposed extension of a natural gas pipeline into town, citing the need for a cheaper fuel source to both reduce residents’ heating bills and boost local businesses.

College protesters push trustees to divest from weapons, global warming

MIDDLEBURY — Several dozen Middlebury College students marked the last day of spring semester classes with a protest outside of the administrative buildings at Old Chapel that lasted through Friday night and into the next day, serenading the board of trustees’ May meeting with a barrage of speeches, chants and acoustic guitar songs.

Pizza was served, and points were made.

Woodchuck Cider kicks off $30M project

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury and Vermont Hard Cider  Co. officials gathered on Friday, May 10, for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Exchange Street site of the company’s new, state-of-the-art cidery, slated for completion by next spring.

The $30 million, 100,000-square-foot project is being built less than a mile from the current Middlebury facility on Pond Lane, which will continue to produce the company’s very popular Woodchuck Hard Cider. A post-and-beam barn will also welcome visitors to Woodchuck, with a gift shop, tastings and tours.

Corrigan fancies a break from teaching after 25 years at Mary Hogan School

MIDDLEBURY — Longtime Mary Hogan Elementary School teacher Anne Corrigan has spent the past 40 years telling young people about interesting people, places and things.

Now she wants to see some of those people, places and things for herself.

With that in mind, Corrigan has decided to end her teaching career after 25 years at the Mary Hogan School.

Tiger track and field prevails over Milton, Hazen

MILTON — Middlebury Union High School track and field athletes won a dozen events on Tuesday, May 7, as both the Tiger boys and girls earned overall victories at a three-team meet hosted by Milton.

The Tiger boys scored 84 points to defeat Milton (40) and Hazen (31), while the Tiger girls picked up 68 points to top Milton (57) and Hazen (10).

Max Moulton led the boys’ team by winning at both 800 meters (2:08.36) and 1,500 meters (4:32.78). Moulton also met the state championship meet qualifying standard by running the 3,000M in 10:47.96.

Durasol snags $720K award to buy Geiger building

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Economic Development Authority (VEDA) has awarded $720,000 in financing to KE Durasol Awnings Inc. to aid the company in its $1.8 million purchase of the former Geiger building at 38 Pond Lane, a Middlebury property the company has leased since 2009.
