Vermont Gas project can tap rate revenues

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) has given Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) permission to use some of its ratepayer revenue to help bankroll a planned expansion of the utility’s gas pipeline into Addison County by 2015.

MUHS to add Rochester athletes

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 board on Tuesday agreed to offer up to two slots on the Middlebury Union High School girls’ varsity basketball roster to players from flood-ravaged Rochester, but learned it will not be able to offer a combined Nordic ski team with Mount Abraham Union High School.

Shashok picked to fill Middlebury selectboard vacancy

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Monday welcomed a new member into the fold: Susan Shashok, a local entrepreneur who will for the next five months fill a vacancy created by Selectwoman Janelle Ashley’s recent resignation.

Shashok and fellow East Middlebury resident Eric Murray had both declared interest in succeeding Ashley until the next municipal elections in March. At that point, the remaining year on Ashley’s term will be up for grabs on the Town Meeting Day ballot.

Middlebury approves fire station proposal

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Tuesday voted 146-78 in favor of a $250,000 bond issue that will pay for final design and engineering work for a proposed major overhaul of the Seymour Street and East Middlebury fire stations.

Tuesday’s successful vote was a precursor to what will be a final, $4.625 million bond referendum for the project, which would result in a new fire station in East Middlebury and a substantial expansion/renovation of the department’s Seymour Street headquarters.

Jan Albers completes chapter as director of Sheldon Museum

MIDDLEBURY — After six years at the helm of the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, Jan Albers is ready to write the next chapter in her professional life.

Albers confirmed on Tuesday that she will be stepping down as executive director of the Sheldon — the repository of some of Addison County’s most treasured historical documents — effective this Friday, Sept. 30.

“The average stay for a museum director is five years, and I have been here for six,” Albers said with a smile.

State unveils new energy plan

MIDDLEBURY — “I believe there is no greater challenge and opportunity to Vermont and our world than the challenge to change the way we use and produce energy,” wrote Gov. Peter Shumlin in the first sentence of the Vermont Comprehensive Energy Plan draft.

When Shumlin appointed Elizabeth Miller to be commissioner of the Department of Public Service (DPS) early this year, she was charged with the task of overseeing the development and completion of a new comprehensive energy plan by the end of 2011 — the first update to the energy plan since 1998.

FEMA aid station makes rounds

MIDDLEBURY — The Federal Emergency Management Agency Mobile Disaster Recovery Center will wrap up a three-day stop in Middlebury at 6 p.m. Thursday. The FEMA team set up shop at VFW Post 7823 off of Exchange Street, helping Addison County residents to register with FEMA and find assistance for damage from the recent flooding.

Group sharpens plan for development head

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen on Monday received an update on an ad hoc committee’s effort to define a proposed new town position of “director of business development.”

The person holding that post — which would need approval from town voters as soon as next March — would be charged with creating, recruiting and retaining high-quality jobs in Middlebury.
