Comedy and Beckett coming to coffee co. playhouse

Vermont Coffee Company’s new Playhouse theater at 1197 Exchange Street in Middlebury will present two new productions in October.  

WAR and PEACE (and other duets) with Deb Gwinn and Jim Cave, goes up this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.

Anyone who has used the Addison Country Transit Resources public transportation system, sipped from an Aqua Vi-Tea Kombucha bottle, used Full Sun products or entered the Vermont Book Shop in downtown Middlebury has witnessed Heywood’s craftsmanship.

Sheldon to offer tours of eight Middlebury churches

MIDDLEBURY — On Sunday, Oct. 9, the Henry Sheldon Museum sponsors a tour featuring eight houses of worship in Middlebury village, notable embodiments of two centuries of religious culture and architectural craftsmanship.The tour is organized by Glenn Andres, Middlebury College Professor Emeritus of History, Art and Architecture. Participants may visit the eight churches in any order between 1-5 p.m.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College hosts the live performance event Cocoon, inspired by the popular storytelling phenomenon The Moth, on Friday, Oct. 7, at the Mahaney Center for the Arts. Six handpicked storytellers will tell a diverse range of stories around the theme of “revelation.” The audience is invited to a reception with the storytellers after the show.

'Brutal disease' changes a family: Nienows face multiple sclerosis

MIDDLEBURY — Mike Nienow thought the persistent pain in his left leg was simply the result of a bad pair of clogs, the footwear of choice for culinary school students at the Patricia Hannaford Career Center.

“It started with the back of my knee; I felt some weird pressure,” Nienow recalled.

But being a bullet-proof 17-year-old with a busy school schedule and social life, he didn’t think too much of it at first.

Then the pain became persistent enough that he switched to a new pair of shoes.

Local teens win international Lego movie competition

MIDDLEBURY — Sixteen-year-old Jack Nop has always been a huge fan of Lego toys and stop-motion film classics like “Wallace & Gromit” and “James & the Giant Peach.”

He decided to combine his two passions a few years ago under the banner of NopFilms to produce several stop-motion Lego videos that have become a fixture on YouTube. Jack’s older brother, Jake, and friend Peter Dickerson also collaborated on the fun filmmaking — which this week paid some big dividends.
