ACSD budget impact becomes clear; Cornwall to see 9-percent tax increase

MIDDLEBURY — State aid information released within the past week by the Vermont Department of Taxes is finally giving Addison Central School District (ACSD) officials a better sense of how Middlebury-area taxpayers could be affected by pre-K-12 education spending during fiscal year 2020.

And the early forecast is that residents in the seven ACSD-member towns could see education property tax rates ranging from a decline of a quarter-penny in Ripton to a 9.27-cent hike in Cornwall, according to information released at Monday’s ACSD board meeting.

Teen and adult actors invited to try out for musical comedy

MIDDLEBURY — This year the Middlebury Community Players will be staging musical comedy, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” To get the production started MCP will hold auditions on Saturday, Jan. 12, and Sunday, Jan. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Middlebury Fitness, 175 Wilson Rd., in Middlebury. Auditioners should arrive at 1 p.m. to register.

Nine Middlebury firefighters honored at annual meeting

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Fire Department and Battell Hose Company held their joint annual awards dinner on Dec. 1, 2018, at the American Legion Post 27 in Middlebury. The dinner was attended by current, former, and life members of the Middlebury Fire Department, as well as by the members of the board of directors of the Battell Hose Company, and guests. New Haven Fire Department Assistant Chief Dean Gilmore served as the master of ceremonies.

'Children of Men' screens in Middlebury

Middlebury Police Log: Wire fraud under investigation

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Jan. 4 received information about an attempt to defraud a local business.

Police said the business received an email urging that it change its direct deposit account information and wire money to a fake account. Police said the business fortunately didn’t honor the request.

Open Door Clinic wins grants, plans for the future

MIDDLEBURY — The Open Door Clinic (ODC) in Middlebury enters 2019 on a high note, with two recent grant awards and a strategic plan that will sharpen the focus of the free medical service for the next three years.

The awards include a $20,000 Ben & Jerry’s Foundation “Vermont Economic Justice” grant, and a $15,000 financial commitment from the Walter Cerf Community Fund.

High court denies Orwell man's appeal of sexual assault conviction

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Supreme Court has rejected an Orwell man’s appeal of his 2017 conviction on a charge of aggravated sexual assault on a minor.

It was in January of 2017 that an Addison County jury convicted Rein Kolts on the felony charge, relating to allegations he had repeatedly engaged in nonconsensual sexual acts over a two-year period with a girl whom court records identified as his niece.

Dykema, Livingston elected to FSA posts

MIDDLEBURY — Ben Dykema of North Ferrisburgh was elected to represent his local administrative area during the recent U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committee election.

Dykema and his wife, Kris, run the Wilcon Farm in North Ferrisburgh. According to AgriMart/Cabot, when the Dykemas first purchased the farm several decades ago, they had 204 acres, 50 milkers and 40 young stock. They now have 450 milkers and 400 young stock. They actively farm 800 acres.

Dykema was a founding member of the Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition.

Dear Homeward Bound: How do I know when my old pet is suffering?

Dear Homeward Bound,

I don’t know if you can answer this but I am wondering when you know when the time has come to say good-bye to a pet. Our family dog, Linus, is 14 and he’s on a lot of medicine to treat different health issues he has. He seems happy but I’m worried that he’s hiding how he feels. I don’t want him to suffer.
