Lincoln news for May 24

LINCOLN - The Lincoln Community School will hold its regular assembly on Friday, May 25, at 8:15 a.m., followed by a Memorial Day Observance walk to the cemetery. This is a decades-old tradition for LCS. The observance will be led by Reverend David Wood. Return time to school will be approximately 10:30 a.m. Please join us.

The town offices, library and LCS will be closed on Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.

Lincoln church aiding Haitian orphanage

LINCOLN — At the United Church of Lincoln they’re known as the “Orphanage Angels.”

Last month, their luggage full-up with supplies and their hearts full-up with love, Patrice Wassmann and Karen Wheeler boarded a plane bound for Caribbean nation of Haiti.

Their destination: L’Orphelinat Notre-Dame de Perpetuel Secours, eight miles north of Port-au-Prince.

Students tell Lincoln's story with words, images, recipes

LINCOLN — A group of Middlebury College students is trying to help the folks in Lincoln learn a little bit more about their town.

Students in Professor John Elder’s Environmental Studies seminar spent the past three months in Lincoln interviewing residents, making maps, producing plays and collecting recipes for a recent presentation.

LINCOLN — A big thank you to the more than 100 volunteers who helped make Green Up Day a success. I couldn’t have done it without all of you. Also, thanks to: Dan Ober and the LVFD crew for use of the fire house, Wendy McIntosh at the Library and Vanessa Stearns at the Lincoln General Store for having green up bags on-hand, Cubbers, the Bobcat Cafe, the Lincoln General Store, Nancy Stevens and Nicole Ludwig for donating to our raffle, Sam Otey for calling out numbers and Betty Brown for use of the canning jars.

VSO coming to local schools

LINCOLN/ CORNWALL/ SALISBURY — The Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s “Ah! Cappella” Vocal Quartet will present performances for three Addison County schools on May 18. (See schedule below.) These performances, which are funded by an anonymous donor and Neat Repeats, will take place at Lincoln Community School at 9 a.m., Bingham Memorial School in Cornwall at 11 a.m., and Salisbury Community School 1:15 p.m.

Lincoln to host Vt. House candidates

LINCOLN — Bridges of Lincoln, a small grassroots group of concerned citizens, will host a public gathering on May 16, at 7 p.m., at Burnham Hall in Lincoln to introduce three candidates hoping to represent the Addison-4 district (Monkton, Starksboro, Bristol and Lincoln) in the Vermont House of Representatives. The event is co-sponsored by the Addison County Democratic Committee.

Lincoln students to present 'We Have a Voice' Thursday

LINCOLN — Fifth- and sixth-graders at Lincoln Community School will give two performances of the original production “We Have a Voice” this Thursday, May 10.

The musical production is set in present day and 1910, is written by fifth- and sixth-grade students and focuses on how one man, Lewis Hine, along with the National Child Labor Committee, created public awareness to help end child labor in America. In 1938, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, which included new regulations on child labor.

Amaryllis to perform in Lincoln and Middlebury

Amaryllis, Vermont’s early music vocal ensemble, will perform some lovely 16th-century period music this coming Sunday and Monday. Under the direction of Susanne Peck, the group will sing a program titled “Luther’s Favorites: Choral Selections from the Time of the Reformation” on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the United Church of Lincoln, in the center of the village of Lincoln and on Monday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m., at Stephen’s Episcopal Church, on the Middlebury Village Green.
