Ferrisburgh school bond driving up tax rate, budget

Posted on January 21, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Central School board has adopted a $3.05 million spending proposal for the upcoming school year that includes a major increase, one that is being driven by the first year of payments on last summer’s $1.5 million school upgrade project.

In all, the increase is about $190,400, or 6.66 percent, over current spending.

Of that, $130,000 will go toward making bond payments. That amount alone would boost FCS spending by 4.55 percent, if voters approve the board’s proposal on Town Meeting Day.

Big solar project eyed for Route 7

Posted on January 19, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

FERRISBURGH — A real estate developer is eyeing 16 acres of land along Route 7 in Ferrisburgh near Vergennes for a new solar energy project that could, if built, generate enough power to run 170 homes each year.

At this point, the 1-megawatt solar farm would be the largest solar power project north of Pennsylvania, according to developer Ernest Pomerleau.

The proposed Addison Solar Farm would be located on land just east of the Vergennes Union High School on the Vergennes-Ferrisburgh town line.

Ferrisburgh, Vergennes officials talk sewer extension

Posted on December 21, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Last Tuesday’s sit-down in Ferrisburgh town offices with town and Vergennes officials to discuss a possible sewer extension deal did not produce an immediate meeting of the minds, but both sides said afterward they would keep lines of communication open.

“It definitely wasn’t, ‘No, we don’t want it,’” said Ferrisburgh selectboard chairwoman Loretta Lawrence on Wednesday. “We want to keep it in discussion.”

Mayor Michael Daniels also said afterward he hoped talks would continue, although it appeared the city’s proposed split of tax revenue might be a sticking point.

Ferrisburgh, city to talk sewer extension

Posted on December 10, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard will meet with Vergennes officials on Tuesday to discuss extending city sewer lines into the town, something that city officials are proposing be done in exchange for a 50-50 share of the extra property tax revenue that sewer service would help create.

Vergennes aldermen in November agreed to float that proposal to Ferrisburgh selectmen. The plan is based on a 1994 agreement backed by Vergennes voters, but rejected then by Ferrisburgh residents. To be adopted this time around, it would again require approval by residents of both communities.

Ferrisburgh considers 'one-board' plan

FERRISBURGH — About two dozen Ferrisburgh residents and Ferrisburgh Central School parents and teachers who gathered in the FCS gym on Thursday night first talked about what they loved about the town’s elementary school. And then they talked about what they saw as the pluses and minuses about the proposal for one board to govern the public schools in the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns.

Ferrisburgh heading to court over Rt. 7 project

Posted on October 22, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — As many on both sides of the issue have said they expected, South Burlington firm Champlain Oil Co.’s controversial Ferrisburgh proposal for a Route 7 gas station, convenience store and fast food restaurant is headed to court.

Champlain Oil (COCO) and Friends of Ferrisburgh for Responsible Growth have both appealed to Environmental Court the Ferrisburgh’s Zoning Board of Adjustment’s Sept. 16 conditional approval of COCO’s planned 9-acre development at the former site of the Ferrisburgh Roadhouse.

Ferrisburgh OKs limited Route 7 development

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment has issued a conditional approval of a Champlain Oil Co. plan for a gas station, convenience store and fast-food restaurant on Route 7. But the approval came without elements of the proposal that COCO officials said were critical to their business plan: diesel fuel pumps and a drive-through window for the restaurant.

The board (ZBA) took that action on Sept. 16 and publicized it last week once COCO acknowledged it had received the ruling in the mail.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh Central School Principal JoAnn Taft-Blakely on Thursday said school maintenance men Wayne Barrows and Gerry Blair would be two of the town’s most important employees this week.

That’s because this summer’s $1.5 million project to improve the school — including installing new heating, ventilation and electrical systems; putting on new, long-lasting rubberized roofing; replacing stained ceiling tiles and rotting soffits; and insulating the space between the ceiling and roof — will be completed on time.

By ANDY KIRKALDY

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh board of listers saved local taxpayers some cash this spring by appealing to the state Department of Taxes how the town’s real estate was valued by the state — and if all works according to estimates, Ferrisburgh’s overall tax rate may rise by less than 2 percent.
