Bristol man arrested again

BRISTOL — A Bristol man on Jan. 8 found himself under arrest for the second time in three weeks, police said.

Bristol police cited Samuel Lewis Hellmuth, 36, into court for violating a relief from abuse order and violating conditions of release issued by a judge from a previous arrest on the same charge.

Group protects land straddling New Haven River in Bristol

BRISTOL — A consortium of groups has joined forces to purchase 40 acres of land along the New Haven River in order to conserve it and donate it to the town of Bristol.

The land, which straddles the river in the Bristol Flats area and was previously owned by Alan and Todd Saunders, will be used with the best interests of the river and environment in mind, its new owners said.

Couple questions effort to raise money on behalf of sick former Marine

BRISTOL — First and foremost, Bristol resident John Shepard, a former U.S. Marine with terminal cancer, and his girlfriend Hillary Provoncha are grateful for the support their acquaintances have shown by donating about $3,800 to a website set up to fund Shepard’s daughter’s attempt to take him on a trip to North Carolina or buy him a boat so they may go fishing together.

Fire destroys Bristol barn on a bitterly cold evening

BRISTOL — A Saturday evening fire destroyed a barn on Choiniere Road in Bristol and required scores of firefighters to extinguish. The barn was owned by the Choiniere family, who until 2012 operated a dairy farm on the property for decades.

ANeSU outsources substitute teacher hiring

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union expects to save district administrators’ time and increase efficiency by hiring a third-party business to manage substitute teachers in the Bristol-area schools, but some current and former substitutes have expressed concern about the plan’s effectiveness.

The district has hired Kelly Services, a company that specializes in temporary staffing nationwide. The new contract will begin in February.

ANeSU Superintendent David Adams said the new service will bring more substitutes into the district.

Bristol library seeks new board members

BRISTOL — Lawrence Memorial Library is seeking a new board member, librarian Nancy Wilson said.

The vacancy was created by the recent resignation of Linda Havey, who moved to Monkton. Board members must be residents of Bristol. The board has five members, each of whom serve three-year terms.

Fire claims Bristol home, one pet injured

BRISTOL — A Sunday afternoon blaze destroyed a home on Lower Notch Road in Bristol and required dozens of firefighters to extinguish. No one was injured, and firefighters were able to recover two family dogs from the blaze — one of which survived intense heat and flames by hiding underneath the porch.

Homeowner Greg West said he and his family were out of town at a Christmas gathering when the fire started.

Bristol board agrees to fund new firefighter gear

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Dec. 18 approved funding for the Bristol Fire Department to purchase six new vehicle extrication coveralls.

Brett LaRose, the first assistant chief of the outfit, said that the fire department had previously purchased 30 suits, but some have been removed from service due to wear and tear.

LaRose said that he spoke with several vendors, and the best quote he received for the coveralls was $2,772. The selectboard approved an appropriation in that amount.

Bristol playground fundraiser exceeds its goal

BRISTOL — A group raising funds for a new playground on the Bristol town green has reached its goal of $11,000.

The Bristol Green Playground Committee used the fundraising website Indiegogo to solicit funds. As of press time, the group had reached raised $12,390. The fundraising period ends Friday.

“This is fantastic,” committee member Darla Senecal said. “To be able to come up with this in such a short time, it’s bolstering.”

As of Tuesday, 134 different people donated to the project.

Mt. Abe building repairs sought

BRISTOL — The chair of the Mount Abraham Facility Advisory Committee on Dec. 18 enumerated for the Bristol selectboard some of the reasons the Mount Abraham Union High School facilities should be updated.

Troy Paradee stressed that the building is by no means unsafe — rather, some school officials and residents believe it does not meet the educational needs of students in this day and age.
