Bristol police will dispose of medication dropped of Saturday

BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department has will hold a Drug Take Back event this Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents of the five-town area — Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro — can drop off their unused or expired medications at the Bristol Police Department at 72 Munsill Ave. at BristolWorks so that they can be properly disposed of.

Bristol seeks $1.1 million for new water main

BRISTOL — The 110-year-old water main along West Street in Bristol is overdue for replacement, according to selectboard members and engineers they hired.

At a public hearing on Monday evening, they explained why Bristol residents should approve a $1,115,020 bond to replace a large portion of the West Street line and extend the town water system to Lovers Lane. A vote by Australian ballot will be held May 10.

UPDATE: Man in Jeep tries to lure Bristol kids

Editors's note: This story was updated Tuesday evening to indicate that the Vermont State Police closed the case.

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police on Tuesday morning, April 19, were seeking the public’s help in finding the driver of red Jeep who allegedly tried to persuade two young girls to get in his vehicle near the intersection of Vincent Drive and Lower Notch Road in Bristol on Sunday, April 17. But by the end of the day troopers had closed the case.

Two more candidates seek House seat in Bristol-area district

Two more candidates have thrown their hats into the ring in the race for one of the two Vermont House seats that represent Bristol, Monkton, Lincoln and Starksboro.

Lincoln resident Mari Cordes is running as a Democrat for a seat in the Addison-4 House district. She is the third Democrat to announce, and thus there will be a primary in August to see which two Dems will run in the General Election.

Bristol-area teachers and schools reach contract accord

BRISTOL — Teachers in the Bristol-area school district and school officials have reached a tentative contract agreement.

The contract between the Addison Northeast Education Association (teachers union) and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union covers the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years, Interim Superintendent Armando Vilaseca said on Tuesday.

160-year-old Bristol barn wins restoration grant

BRISTOL — A recently awarded historic preservation grant will help restore a 150-year-old barn on the Rocky Dale Gardens property in Bristol.

“We’re elated,” said Rocky Dale owner and landscape designer Ed Burke, of the $15,000 matching grant from the Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development’s Division for Historic Preservation.

“It’s still a costly and uphill battle for us to do this, but we find it incredibly important to this homestead and to this business.”

BRISTOL — April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Like most people, those words would mean little to me prior to 2010, the year I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. I had heard of Parkinson’s but paid little attention to it. I suppose that is the way we are with most things until it affects us or those we love.

Writer/carver/painter Tim Brookes will share his remarkable and thought-provoking perspective on this question in the program “Endangered Alphabets, Cultural Erosion, and the Future of the Written Word” at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol on Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m. The presentation is hosted by the One World Library Project and sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council through its Speakers Bureau program.

Bristol case sparks sex offender questions

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs wants to change state law so that local law enforcement can’t be left out of the loop when a registered sex offender moves into their community.

In early March, Gibbs learned that a registered sex offender had been living in Bristol since early October without his police department’s knowledge. State law requires that offenders notify the Department of Public Service and the Sex Offender Registry when they move, said Gibbs, but not local law enforcement.
