Otter Valley football scores 53, Poultney, 0

POULTNEY — The Otter Valley Union football team on Saturday cruised to its third straight one-sided Division III win, this time defeating host Poultney, 53-0.

Quarterback Carson Leary completed eight of 12 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns and ran for three touchdowns while carrying the ball 12 times for 151 yards.

Tyson Cram picked up 158 yards on five carries, including a 46-yard TD run and another run for 65 yards. Brent Nickerson also rushed for more than 100 yards.

Fair Haven football takes down the Eagles

BRISTOL — Visiting Fair Haven used a big second half to pull away from the Mount Abraham Union High School football team on Saturday and earn a 56-22 Division II football victory. The Slaters, who reached the D-II final a year ago, improved to 2-1.

The Eagle offense showed life and scored all 22 points in the first half. Ryan Paquin rushed for one score and finished with 133 yards rushing on 22 attempts, while quarterback Coleman Russell completed 10 of 15 passes and threw two touchdown passes to Wyatt Gracie, who caught six balls.

Eagle field hockey falls to U-32

EAST MONTPELIER — Host U-32 on Friday edged the Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team, 1-0.

The Raiders, the only Division II team on the D-II Eagles’ schedule, improved to 3-0. The Eagles dropped to 0-3 with their third straight loss, all on the road, two by one goal and the third to D-I defending champion Essex.

The Eagles will host for the first time on Wednesday, when Colchester visits at 4 p.m.

Editorial: There is no easy choice for the next governor of Vermont

Vermont now has five capable candidates who have announced their intentions to run for governor: Sue Minter, Shap Smith and Matt Dunne for the Democratic Party’s nomination, and Bruce Lisman and Phil Scott for the Republican Party. As well as being well-rounded, each candidate has their own particular skill set or background that could tip the scales in their favor.

Opinion: Act of kindness was very inspiring

Last Sunday afternoon we were out sailing on Lake Champlain. We got a little too close to a shallow area south of Fields Bay and before completing a tack (away from shore), we slowly hit the muddy bottom. We were in no danger but were stuck.

My crew and I set out to extract ourselves by using our dinghy and an anchor to “kedge” off, but before long a powerboat with two persons aboard offered their assistance. In no time they pulled us off into deeper water.

Opinion: Store plans 'sunflower trade' day

The Addison Four Corners store is offering a “ sunflower trade” day on Saturday, Sept. 19. Bring in four sunflowers in trade for a breakfast sandwich.

For each sunflower we receive we will donate $2 to the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund. Please help us to help others that are being persecuted for their choice of faith. Christianity is being forced to retreat and give ground to terrorists, while our government doesn’t make a peep about it. Is that because of the election campaigns?
