Blue-green algae is causing havoc in New England's lakes

It came from the lake. It is a life form nearly as old as life itself. Living peacefully in the depths for eons, it is awakened by humankind’s abuse of the environment. It strikes out with toxins that attack nerves or the liver. Attempts to kill it only make it more toxic.

Monkton citizen sought for Mount Abe board

MONKTON — The Mt. Abraham Union Middle/High School Board is seeking a Monkton resident interested in serving on the 13-member school board as the result of a recent vacancy.

After seven years of service, longtime Mt. Abe board member Shawna Sherwin submitted her letter of resignation to ANeSU board chair Dawn Griswold on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Sherwin was elected to a three-year term, which officially expires in 2018.

Patton to speak at Sheldon Museum's annual meeting

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College President Laurie L. Patton will be the featured speaker at the annual meeting and dinner of the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History on Thursday, Nov. 5.

Patton became 17th president of Middlebury on July 1, 2015. She joined Middlebury after serving for four years as dean of Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and as the Robert F. Durden Professor of Religion. At Duke, she oversaw 36 academic departments and programs in arts and sciences for the school.

Northlands anti-bullying effort continues

VERGENNES — On Friday, Sept. 19, Northlands Job Corps formally kicked off another year of its anti-bullying program with a special assembly. It was the culmination of the official Y2Y (Youth-to-Youth) Week at the federal job training program in Vergennes.

Day of the Dead to be celebrated in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center will host its fourth annual Middlebury celebration of Día de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) on Sunday, Nov. 1, from 2-5 p.m. in the first-floor gallery. The event will feature homemade Mexican food, a Día de los Muertos altar constructed by University of Vermont Spanish lecturer Rachael Montesano and her students, and a performance by the Burlington-based brass band Brass Balagan.

BRANDON — Technology is inextricably woven into today’s culture. The modern cellphone is a computer unto itself. There are desktops, laptops, notebooks, iPads, even computer watches. Automatic teller machines, grocery store registers, gas pumps — even our cars are computerized. Social media has become a catchphrase for how many people stay in touch via computer, be it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or basic email.

Economic development group offering business grants

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) announces that it will award five grants of $500 each to Addison County businesses for green energy projects. Winning businesses must make a minimum 1:1 matching contribution to the project. Applications are due by Friday, Nov. 13.

Eligibility requirements for the applicants include the following: The business must be located in Addison County, and the applicant must be in compliance with state regulations, be registered with the Vermont Secretary of State, and be in good standing.

Poet Richard Blanco to speak about his journey to the inauguration

MIDDLEBURY — Presidential inaugural poet Richard Blanco will discuss identity and belonging in a talk at Middlebury College’s Mead Chapel on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. His talk, “Becoming American: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. The talk is presented with Middlebury College.
