Shumlin to pardon some with marijuana convictions

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin, citing 2013 legislative action to decriminalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, on Thursday announced his intention to allow Vermonters convicted of that offense prior to the law change to apply for a pardon, essentially wiping the offense off their criminal record. Applications will be accepted beginning Dec. 8 and taken through Dec. 25.

Public invited to take part in 'Messiah Sing' this Sunday

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Congregational Church will once again host the area’s annual “Messiah Sing” this Sunday. Jeff Rehbach, conductor of the Middlebury College Community Chorus, leads the sing-along of this famous work by George Frederic Handel for choir and orchestra.

Letter urges Scott to take the state toward organic dairy

VERMONT — A coalition that includes dairy farmers, academics, environmentalists and business owners is encouraging Gov.-elect Phil Scott to have Vermont develop its own dairy policy. In a letter, the group said it believes the federal policy hurts Vermont farmers.

A spokesman for Scott said the governor-elect has concerns about what he believes the group actually wants. The spokesman said Scott has no alternative proposal to help Vermont’s dairy farmers but will look to his agriculture secretary.

Tiger girls' hockey opens with a big win over BFA

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team, a Division I title contender in the past two winters, got off to a solid start on Tuesday, knocking off visiting D-I rival BFA-St. Albans, 5-2, in the Tigers’ season opener.

The Tigers outshot the Comets, 30-16; shrugged off BFA’s tying goal 17 seconds into the second period by ripping off the game’s next four scores; and avenged a 5-2 home loss to BFA in a D-I semifinal last winter.

Local high school basketball teams come up short in early action

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school basketball play earlier this week, the Vergennes boys’ dropped their home opener, the Mount Abraham girls lost a road game, and the Middlebury boys came up short on their home court. Other teams were idle.

COMMODORE BOYS

Harwood pulled away in the late going on Tuesday to cement a 78-62 victory at VUHS in the Commodores’ season opener.

The Highlanders led, 64-60, with 2:30 to go before finishing the game on a 14-2 run. Lucas Baron tossed in 37 points to help Harwood win its opener.

Panther women's hockey blanks Spartans

CASTLETON — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team closed out first-semester play on Saturday with a 2-0 win at Castleton University. The victory over the 3-7 Spartans allowed the Panthers, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III last week, to carry a 5-2 record into their holiday break. The Panthers are idle until they host another ranked team, Elmira, at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 2.

Women's basketball team ends term with two wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team on Saturday closed out its home game against visiting Skidmore with an 11-2 run to rally for a 52-47 victory.

After also defeating Clarkson, 54-40 this past Wednesday, the Panthers concluded their first-semester play with a 6-1 record. They will next face Springfield on Dec. 30 in the first round of the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic.

Two setbacks drop men's hockey to 0-8

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team dropped a pair of home games vs. NESCAC opponents this past weekend to fall to 0-8, 0-6 in league play, as first-semester play concluded.

The Panthers will return to action on Dec. 30, when they host the annual Middlebury Holiday Classic. They will face St. Anselm at 1 p.m., and SUNY Canton will meet Manhattanville at 4 p.m. The consolation and final will be played on Saturday, Dec. 31, at 1 and 4 p.m.
