Editorial: Going for the triple crown

This coming Saturday presents the opportunity for a triple crown: throughout the state it is the 42nd annual Green Up Day with all the festivities that entails; it’s also Connect the Dot day, which draws attention to global climate change; and to cap it off, there are many opportunities to help clean up some of the devastation from last summer’s Tropical Storm Irene.

Editorial: The party of bravado

The audacity of congressional Republicans to suggest that President Barack Obama is politicizing the death of Osama Bin Laden is beyond the pale.

This is the party whose president gave enemies of the U.S. nick-names from a poker deck. He accompanied such crassness with the bravado of a cowboy with the first show of unrestrained Hollywood when he proclaimed, on a battleship, “Mission Accomplished,” way back in the first months of a 10-year war. So little did he know.

President George W. Bush is also the guy who gave us such jewels as these:

Vermont State Police Log: State police seek public help in Orwell car theft cases

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are investigating two recent thefts of vehicles in Orwell, and is seeking the public’s help.

The owner of a white 1999 Dodge passenger van reported it stolen from Sanford Road in Orwell sometime between April 11 and 18. This van is registered in Vermont and has tinted windows. Also reported stolen from this property were six industrial size batteries.

Middlebury Police Log: Police respond to assault, thefts, dogs, long-lost gun

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Douglas Lazarus, 68, of Middlebury for domestic assault following an alleged incident at a Maple Street residence on April 28. Police took a statement from the alleged victim and photographed an injury.

Vergennes Police Log: Copper theft suspects cited for additional violations

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on May 27 arrested a Bristol man on an outstanding warrant and cited a Salisbury man for driving with a suspended license, criminal offense, after stopping a car in Vergennes following a Vermont State Police alert.

Police jailed Kaleb Gorton, 19, of Bristol in the Addison County Sheriff’s Department on an outstanding warrant for violation of conditions of probation, while 26-year-old George Niles Devoid of Salisbury, the driver, received the DLS citation.

Generally, I am quite protective of this narrow patch I have carefully cultivated in the academy.

I am something of a baseball scholar, Dr. Baseball, teaching baseball courses in the American Studies Program at the local college.

When something of a serious nature about baseball enters the public discourse I feel I should take notice and have something to say.

MUHS girls' tennis sees win streak end

MIDDLEBURY — Visiting Montpelier ended the Middlebury Union High School girls’ tennis team’s three-match winning streak on Monday, 6-1.

The inexperienced Tigers, who dropped to 3-2, were playing without three absent singles players against a team whose only loss had come against Division I title contender Champlain Valley, 4-3.

Bidding adieu to a 'giant'

MIDDLEBURY — They arrived from all corners of the state by the hundreds on Monday, bathing Middlebury College’s white marble Mead Chapel in a sea of green, blue and black.

From constables to reformed lawbreakers to the governor of the state of Vermont, they filled the chapel to honor a man who many described as a “giant” in law enforcement — Addison County Sheriff James Coons, who died on April 16 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 59.
