MIDDLEBURY — When Katherine Smith Abbott heard the news in 2005 that the Middlebury College Museum of Art was considering purchasing a 600-year-old Italian painting, she was elated. This was right up Smith Abbott’s alley.

An associate dean and a professor of art history at the college, Smith Abbott specializes in Italian Renaissance art. She knew that the college museum didn’t own any work from the Italian Renaissance, and she urged the museum’s director to consider the purchase, both because of its condition and the void it filled in the college collection.

Predictions are simply unpredictable

In “Rocky 3” (for my money the most entertaining flick in the series) reporters ask Clubber Lang, played by the inimitable Mr. T, for his view of his upcoming heavyweight title fight with Rocky Balboa.

His response: “My prediction? Pain.”

It remains the most accurate forecast in the history of real or fictional sporting events.

Campin in the fall .jpg

The nights are cooler, the days are shorter and winter is just around the corner. But just because summer is on its way out doesn’t mean you have to retire your outdoor gear quite yet.

Summer is a popular time to hit the trails with friends and family for an overnight camping trip, but fall can be just as enjoyable. Crisp air, fiery foliage, less foot traffic and a dwindling mosquito population makes fall one of the best seasons to spend outdoors.

ADDISON COUNTY — Cool temperatures and plenty of sunshine herald good news for apple growers in Addison County.

Those conditions are paving the way for good color on this year’s crop of apples, as well as thick crowds at pick-your-own orchards in the region.

“It’s a very good crop,” said Bill Suhr, the owner of Champlain Orchards in Shoreham, and many orchardists in the region are reporting similar news. Pickers took to the field last month and will be busy harvesting the county’s apple crop well into October.
