Brandon school eyes narrative report cards

Posted on February 1, 2010 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — A snapshot can tell a short story, but a photo album can weave a longer, more enriching tale.

BRIDPORT — Three weeks ago, Gedeleine Franklin was bundled out of the orphanage she knew as home after a slip in an underwater fault plunged Haiti into chaos.

Ten days ago, the two-year-old little girl was hustled onto an airplane with 80 other children bound for Miami. Aid workers, airline employees and orphanage volunteers cradled the children as they made the halting, unfamiliar trek out of Haiti.

MIDDLEBURY — It’s been no secret that the Middlebury municipal gym has been leaking thousands of dollars in heat each year. Selectmen on Tuesday ordered an energy audit to determine exactly where the heat is escaping and how the building could be tightened up to keep energy in and the cold out.

VERGENNES — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team rallied from a 15-3 deficit at Vergennes on Thursday for a 39-34 victory that was Coach Connie Larose’s 300th. (See related stories.)

Mount Abe senior Shanna Gebo said LaRose tried and failed in advance to hide that news from the Eagles.

“In the huddle we talked about how we knew it was her 300th,” Gebo said. “And she started blushing and getting red when we told her we really wanted to do it for her. And then of course she was just like, ‘Nope, it’s for you. Don’t think about it being for me.’”

By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School board members are eyeing possible changes to the school’s food service program as a way to save more than $100,000.

The board discussed the changes briefly at a Jan. 19 meeting that drew current food service employees who urged board members to consider more than fiscal savings as they contemplate the future of the program at Mount Abe.

Editorial: Papers should be in local hands, not the bankers'

Here’s what the Seattle Times’s editorial said:

BRISTOL — As longtime Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball coach Connie LaRose reached her 300th win at Vergennes on Thursday, current and former players praised LaRose as a coach and a person, while peers marveled at the Bristol resident’s long tenure and consistent success.

LaRose, 65, is in her 19th year heading the Mount Abe program. In the 1960s she coached a year each at the high school level in New Haven and Bristol (see related story). LaRose has won more games than any high school coach in Addison County, and her career winning percentage is about .660.

Senior housing project may open in 2011

Posted on February 1, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The principal developer of the planned Vergennes senior housing project said last week that he is optimistic that the last pieces of the funding puzzle will fall into place this spring, allowing construction to start this summer and — if all goes well — seniors to move in by the summer of 2011.

Matt Moore, Housing Vermont Inc.’s project developer for the proposed 25-unit, $5.8 million facility off Monkton Road, said two grant requests totaling $1.6 million are still outstanding.
