Railway deal helps to solidify Middlebury's big dig

MIDDLEBURY — Two competing railroads have signed an agreement clearing the way for a freight train detour around downtown Middlebury during the summer of 2020, when a concrete tunnel will be installed in place of the Main Street and Merchants Row overpasses.

The agreement is between Vermont Rail and its competitor, the Genesee & Wyoming — which owns New England Central Railroad. It allows Vermont Rail to detour its trains around Middlebury using New England Central tracks.

New device at Porter speeds recovery for hip replacement patients

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center President Dr. Fred Kniffin recalled the day five years ago when the hospital’s orthopedic surgeons asked for a “Hana Table.”

“At the time, I had never heard of such a thing,” Kniffin said.

'Nerdy' interests lead pharmacist duo to plan brewery in Bristol

Sam and Jamie Sawyer, practitioners of the time-honored art of the apothecary, are combining their love of chemistry and beer to form a new venture: the Hopothecary Brew Co. Last month they purchased the Rockydale Pizza property, east of Bristol village, where they intend to open a taproom next spring.

Fire cadet's dream transcends both language and culture

MIDDLEBURY — English is not his first language. America is not his first culture. But this has not stopped 17-year-old Sepehr Belar from pursuing his childhood dream of becoming a firefighter.

That dream, so common among children the world over, just happens to have begun in Tehran, Iran, where Belar grew up, and where fire-related tragedies left a strong impression on him.

SUDBURY — Vice President Mike Pence spent his Labor Day Weekend in the Green Mountain State and enjoyed Vermont’s official summertime treat.

WCAX-TV reported Air Force Two touched down at Burlington Airport early Friday afternoon. A motorcade traveled south on Interstate 89. Videos posted to Facebook showed the motorcade then traveling west on Route 4 through Killington.

Teenager Grady Brokaw dreams of service, joins the fire department

LINCOLN — Grady Brokaw heard the stories and he was hooked.

“I had a friend and his dad who were on the fire department,” he said. “My interest in firefighting developed through them. I could imagine myself doing what they do, and then I got excited about it.”

As soon as he turned 15, Brokaw applied and was accepted as a fire cadet in the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Company. Last summer he attended the Vermont State Firefighters Association Cadet Academy in Pittsford, and now, at 17, he’s enjoying himself.
