Ferrisburgh looks to help neighbors of dog rescuer

FERRISBURGH — With at least 30 residents watching, the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday talked about three different approaches to handle longstanding neighborhood complaints about a Sand Road dog rescue operation that currently houses not only about 30 dogs and 10 cats, but now has a rat infestation.

Vermont Senate eyes funding path to clean water

SHOREHAM — The Vermont Senate this week was set to take action on a bill that would lead to a funding scheme for the state’s share of an estimated $2.3 billion cleanup of the state’s waterways — including Lake Champlain.

Bill S.260 would create an eight-person study committee that would be asked, among other things, to consider a per-parcel fee to collect the more than $26 million in annual revenues over the next 20-plus years that is Vermont’s share of the federally mandated cleanup.

Bristol demonstration keeps focus on guns

BRISTOL — The day after 17 people were shot to death at a Parkland, Fla., school, last month as Fair Haven police investigated a Poultney teen for planning a similar shooting at Fair Haven Union High School, Mount Abraham Union High School conducted a routine fire drill.

Updated: Sale of Clark Hinsdale's iconic dairy farm is sign of the times

CHARLOTTE — Clark Hinsdale III’s family has been farming on Vermont’s soils for seven generations in Addison and Chittenden counties.

A week ago (March 21), he auctioned off his herd of 250 milking cows, his farm implements and tools, his four robotic milkers and all the agricutural trappings of a lifetime in the dairy industry at one of Vermont’s most iconic dairy operations.

MIDDLEBURY — A year ago, Andrew Gardner and Caroline Damon were living a life that many would call the Vermont dream. They had a quiet old house deep in the woods of Ripton, surrounded by dirt roads and hillsides with dark nights filled only with sounds of the barred owls calling out into the void.

Many people long for solitude like this, far away from the lights and bustle of city living and believe that’s what it means to “make it” in Vermont.

But Gardner and Damon were feeling torn.

Mari Cordes confirms second bid for Addison-4 House seat

LINCOLN — Mari Cordes is hoping in November to reverse the order of results in her last race for Addison-4’s two seats in the Vermont House. In that 2016 election, the Lincoln Democrat finished a close fourth among the four candidates competing for the right to represent Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro.

It was Cordes’ first House run, and she’s using it as a learning experience to make her a more successful candidate this time around.

Town Hall Theater, Shoreham library awarded repair funds

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater and Shoreham’s Platt Memorial Library have landed state grants that will improve the durability and historic integrity of those two venerable buildings.

The Vermont Division for Historic Preservation recently awarded matching grants of $9,400 to replace around 500 deteriorating bricks in the exterior façade of the THT building, and $9,544 to restore the original front entrance of the Platt Memorial Library.

Vergennes sets zoning hearing on Armory Lane affordable housing

VERGENNES — A proposal for 24 affordable housing units in a 23,000-square-foot building on Armory Lane will get a public hearing before the Vergennes Development Review Board at 7:10 p.m. on Monday.

The project, a joint proposal of the Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) and Housing Vermont, could be built as soon as 2020 on a 6.52-acre parcel across the road from the Armory Lane senior housing facility.
