Vergennes city officials evaluate grievance against town manager, clerk

VERGENNES — It remains uncertain exactly how new Vergennes Mayor Renny Perry and the city council will handle a citizen complaint against City Clerk Joan Devine and City Manager Mel Hawley, but Perry said the matter could be settled privately among the parties or behind closed doors at a city council meeting.

Perry outlined several options in a recent interview, the first of which would be a direct meeting with downtown business owner Shannon Mahoney.

ADDISON COUNTY — Yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus), with its striking yellow flowers, provides a colorful addition to the Vermont landscape — and a threat to our priority natural communities. In recent years, it has gained a foothold in many Lake Champlain wetlands and flood plain forests of Champlain direct drainage streams. Both are priority natural communities, as documented by Vermont Fish and Wildlife Natural Heritage Program.

We often hear of the importance of using native plants in our gardens.

First and foremost, native plants are extremely beneficial for the wider environment. In addition, since they are adapted to our climate, they should be easy to grow. And finally they help us create gardens with that elusive feeling of “belonging” in the wider landscape.

College conference to focus on the pivotal year of 1968

MIDDLEBURY — Three Middlebury College professors — who cover the disciplines of Geosciences, History of Art & Architecture, and Political Science — are organizing a three-day conference that will bring 15 experts to campus early next month to consider a historically pivotal year: 1968.

The college’s Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs will host “1968, Fifty Years of Struggle,” on March 8-10.

She returns for her 10th consecutive season on the Middlebury Performing Arts Series with an exciting new ensemble of friends, performing works by Haydn, Bridge and Dvo?ák at the Mahaney Center for the Arts on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
