Letter to the editor: Trump following in W's footsteps

We are hearing Trumped up charges that the U.S. intelligence services got Iraq wrong so we shouldn’t believe them now. Now the Main Trumper is saying he knows better than our intelligence people. Same mistake.

Bush was confident that his story, that his friends made up, was the truth, so he invaded Iraq. Now the Trump is doing the same thing, ignoring the truth and selling another bag of Trumped up “alternate truth,” which really should be called what they are — lies.

Panther women's hockey skates to 2-2 tie with Elmira

MIDDLEBURY — In a Monday battle of top NCAA Division III women’s hockey teams, visiting No. 2 Elmira scored twice in final three minutes to tie No. 6 Middlebury, 2-2.

Elmira remained unbeaten at 7-0-2. The Panthers stand at 5-2-1 heading into two home games this weekend vs. NESCAC foe Amherst, Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Panthers outshot the Soaring Eagles, 7-3, in the scoreless first period, and then took the lead with two second-period strikes.

Opinion: Electoral College is worth saving

Now that Donald Trump has won the presidency despite losing the popular vote, there’s a growing cry to rethink, or even abolish, the Electoral College. This would be a mistake.

Yes, the Electoral College is a tempting target, especially for Democrats. Two of the past five presidential elections have seen Republicans claim the White House by winning the electoral vote while losing the popular vote.

Vt. State Police Log: Troopers respond to three traffic fatalities

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police responded two separate traffic crashes in the area last week that resulted in the deaths of three people — a Rutland couple in the first and an Orwell man in the second.

Charles K. Ovian, 84, and Sally Ovian, 83 were killed and a New Haven man was injured in a two-car crash on Route 7 in Brandon on Dec. 28. Just before 2:30 p.m. that Wednesday, Brandon police responded to a report of a two-car crash with entrapment in front of Otter Valley Union High School south of downtown. State police were called to assist.

Middlebury Police Log: Authorities cite several for DUI

MIDDLEBURY — On Jan. 1 at almost half past midnight, Middlebury police cited Wesley O’Dell, 41, of Middlebury for driving under the influence and attempting to elude a police officer after a traffic stop and short foot pursuit on Court Street.

Police said they measured O’Dell’s blood-alcohol content at 0.198 percent; the legal limit is 0.08.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Took a suicidal woman to Porter Hospital after an incident on South Street on Dec. 26.

Vergennes Police Log: Alcohol incidents keep city police busy

VERGENNES — Several alcohol and drug incidents kept Vergennes police busy as 2016 ended and 2017 began.

During a Jan. 1 patrol Vergennes police found a drunken woman lying face down in the road at the intersection of School and South Maple streets. Police said she refused to identify herself or submit to blood-alcohol content testing, and they took her to the Act 1 detoxification center in Burlington. She was refused admittance there, and police then took her to the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility to sober up.

Bristol Police Log: Bristol woman cited for third embezzlement

BRISTOL — Bristol police cited Billie Jene Laflam, 43, of Bristol for embezzlement from a local business on Dec. 22.

At the time of the alleged embezzlement in Bristol, Laflam was under supervised release for a 2014 federal wire fraud conviction. Laflam was also convicted of embezzlement in Chittenden County in 2009.

Police reported the sum involved in this most recent case was “in excess of $100,” making it a felony.
