Guest Editorial: Jim Condos, Setting the record straight on Vermont's voter registration laws

Posted on September 28, 2017 |
By Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos

Recently, Ethan Allen Institute President Rob Roper posted an op-ed with the inflammatory, sensational title, “So Second Home Owners Can Vote in Vermont?” Perhaps as intended, Mr. Roper’s attention-seeking commentary caused significant confusion and concern about Vermont’s residency law for voting purposes.

As Vermont’s chief elections official, let me set the record straight.

By Addison Independent

The transnational performance group Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project (BTDP) — based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and Philadelphia, Penn. — will draw from Africanist and postmodernist aesthetics to present “Declassified Memory Fragment” on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30, 8 p.m., at the Mahaney Center for the Arts in Middlebury. This dance theatre work with live music is inspired by memory, history, and images of the political and cultural realities currently affecting the continent of Africa.

Letters to the Editor: Town must be transparent in public matters

Posted on September 28, 2017 |
By Eilat Glikman

I am a Middlebury resident and voter. I am also a professor at the College and a mother to two young children. I am deeply invested in the quality of my community, and as such, I write to express to you my disappointment in the reports of the Middlebury Town Selectboard’s anti-democratic plan to ignore the overwhelming will of their constituents and pursue a fear-based and un-scientific approach to the issue of cannabis legalization.

Letters to the Editor: Middlebury rejects VLCT fear-mongering on pot

Posted on September 28, 2017 |
By Dave Silberman

In his letter to the editor on September 20, Middlebury Selectboard Chair Brian Carpenter attempts to describe the Vermont League of Cities and Towns' "new" position on marijuana legalization as something other than opposition.  This is absurd.

The new position states that marijuana "should only be legalized for recreational purposes after all public safety, public health, and local regulatory and budgetary concerns are adequately addressed."

Letters to the Editor: Federal health centers face 70 percent cuts — now

Posted on September 28, 2017 |
By Bob Donnis

I am writing in support of Mountain Health Center here in Bristol. As a Federally Qualified Heath Center, they provide medical and dental services to people regardless of insurance, or lack of insurance. For those less fortunate the fees are based on income.

Mountain Health is one of about 40 FQHCs in Vermont. There are hundreds around the U.S. If not extended by Sept. 30 (Friday), federal funding for these essential health centers will be cut by 70 percent. Many will close their doors. Millions across the country will lose affordable care.

Posted on September 28, 2017 |
By Jessica Danyow

As the end of September nears and we get used to the routines and rhythms of fall, I am reminded of the consistency and continuity with which Addison County’s veterinarians have served the homeless animals at Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society.
