Middlebury Police Log: Alleged assault under investigation

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police launched an investigation into an alleged domestic assault in the Delancy Lane area on Feb. 15.

Police had not made any arrests in the matter as the Independent went to press.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Were informed of a theft from a Middlebury College dorm room (off Chateau Road) on Feb. 13. Police said they found no evidence of forced entry into the room.

Vergennes Police Log: City police cite four on retail theft

VERGENNES — Vergennes police have issued four citations for retail theft dating back to two separate late-January cases at Kinney Drug Store in which personal and skin care items were stolen.

Police said they received help from members of the public and other law enforcement agencies in identifying four suspects after the city department made public on Feb. 17 pictures of the suspects captured from Kinney Drugs security cameras.

Vermont State Police Log: Police ask for leads in Ferrisburgh burglaries

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are looking into two burglaries at Route 7 businesses in North Ferrisburgh that both occurred in the early morning hours last Friday or late the night before.

The first was at the Vermont Flannel Company at 5467 Route 7. Troopers said their investigation showed that someone had forced their way through the front door after hours and stole merchandise. Police said the incident occurred sometime between 5:35 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 6:45 a.m. on Feb. 17.

Panther skiers claim third in Middlebury Winter Carnival

MIDDLEBURY — Wins by Alpine skiers Caroline Bartlett and Rob Cone highlighted the Middlebury College ski team’s third-place finish at the Panthers’ own winter carnival this past Friday and Saturday, with events held at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl and Rikert Nordic Center.

Dartmouth won the carnival with 1,027 points, followed by Vermont (816), Middlebury (750) and New Hampshire (648).

Bartlett picked up her third giant slalom win of the season on Saturday, and Cone won the slalom on Friday.

Porter Medical Center directors endorse affiliation with UVM Health Network; one hurdle left

MIDDLEBURY — The Porter Medical Center (PMC) and University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) boards on Thursday voted unanimously to sign an affiliation agreement, a move that would result in reduced independence for Addison County’s hospital but net it greater financial stability, some key capital improvements and a more diverse menu of health care services for local patients.

Thursday’s board votes were a monumental step, but the affiliation move still hinges on some changes to Porter’s organizational bylaws.

Vergennes Opera House thriving in 20th year of revival

VERGENNES — On Feb. 14 the Vergennes City Council heard an upbeat report from Friends of the Vergennes Opera House President Gerianne Smart about the financial and artistic health of the historic theater. The VOH has several big shows lined up for the coming months and is planning now for its 20th season since reopening in 1997 upstairs in the 120-year-old Vergennes City Hall.

“It’s been a wonderful 20 years, I’ve got to say,” Smart told the council.
