As December began, stewards of Middlebury’s Memorial Sports Center started a fund drive that could result in the completion of the 24-year-old community recreational facility’s second floor. Boosters of the sports center look to raise $350,000 for a heated viewing area, elevator access and public restrooms for the top floor of the facility.

11-13.jpg

November began with many Vermonters dealing with a record-breaking number of statewide power outages and cleaning up after a major windstorm. The winds started to blow on the night of Oct. 29 and continued on Oct. 30, with winds topping 120 miles per hour on Mount Mansfield and reaching 80 miles per hour in Addison County. Schools closed that Monday due to impassable streets (and some didn’t open again until Wednesday), roughly 12,200 Addison County residents lost power, and a shelter opened in Monkton for those who just wanted a warm place to rest and take a shower.

As October began, WomenSafe, a Middlebury-based nonprofit that helps victims of domestic abuse, made public their most ambitious fundraising effort in the 32-year history of the organization. It sought $1.2 million to purchase and renovate its new headquarters, and for a reserve fund to help the nonprofit pay for long-term maintenance of those headquarters. The organization had raised more than half of their goal by quietly collecting targeted donations before making the campaign public.

On Aug. 1 the Ferrisburgh selectboard signed a $337,500 purchase and sale agreement to sell the town-owned 34.91-acre parcel at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A to Monkton malt maker Andrew Peterson. Peterson hopes to move his business, which processes a major beer ingredient for Vermont microbrewers, from a Monkton barn to the site. The board just hopes the deal, which was pending at year’s end, closes — unlike two previous sales, both of which fell through.

As July opened it became public that longtime Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs would retire in August. Gibbs served the town in its police department for 31 years, beginning in 1986 and taking over as its leader in 1997.

Also in Bristol, Addison Northeast Supervisory Union teachers and support staff ratified a new two-year deal that would give them pay hikes, but require them to chip in more for the cost of the health insurance benefits.

The Addison Central School District (ACSD) board decided against moving 6th grade instruction into Middlebury Union Middle School, beginning in the fall. A majority of the panel agreed with Superintendent Peter Burrows’ opinion that such a move would be imprudent at a time when the school district is still adjusting to the major changes of consolidated governance and the transition to an International Baccalaureate Program.

Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater drew a full house on May 11 for a real-life drama — discussion of the potential economic and environmental impacts of the impending $52 million replacement of downtown Middlebury’s Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges. The Vermont Agency of Transportation sponsored the public hearing, at which numerous downtown property owners, merchants and residents voiced concern about how the projected three years of construction might affect commerce, tourism, quality of life, nearby historic structures and the adjacent Otter Creek.
