County's bees healthier than in many parts of U.S.; pesticides still a problem

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County is a good place to be a bee compared to many other parts of the country, local beekeepers report. And that’s a good thing.

“Roughly one-third of the food we eat is pollinated by bees,” according to Cornwall beekeeper Andrew Munkres.

Nevertheless, honey bees and other pollinators here continue to face serious challenges from parasites, from climate change, and most especially from an increased presence of pesticides and other toxins in crops and in the environment.

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — City Manager Mel Hawley told the Vergennes City Council at its meeting last week that the long-awaited — and long-demanded by a number of residents — inspection of the city’s East Street swimming pool was completed earlier in October, with the facility generally getting passing grades.

Steve Biernacki of Aquatic Development Group of Cohoes, N.Y., looked at the pool along with Hawley, pool manager Brad Castillo and others for about two and a half hours.

LINCOLN — Every October for 30 years, organizers at Weathervane Outreach in Lincoln have reached out to seniors (and to whoever walks through the door) to provide a listening ear, good food, a good laugh and a chance to rock an awesome costume at an annual Halloween party.

And, yes, there have also been blood pressure checks at the party since 1991 and flu shots since 1995.

Letter to the editor: A reflection on Halloween and on this year's election

Posted on October 31, 2016 |
By Larry Jones

This year the calendar makes perfect sense:

Election Day and Hallowe’en are close.

For 18 months we’ve had a hefty dose

Of vitriol and wickedness immense.

But each November all the ghouls go hence;

We take down sheets and jack o’lanterns gross.

If Hallowe’en has left us comatose,

At least no one has taken great offense.

By John Flowers

CORNWALL — Cornwall Town Clerk Sue Johnson will soon be trading her town hall office for a very tiny, Spartan workspace in a nearby trailer.

No, she’s not being banished by community leaders. She’s just going to have to go through some short-term pain for the eventual gain of a renovated Cornwall Town Hall, which will feature a new roof, new quarters for the municipal library, additional storage space and a spruced-up environment in which to conduct town business.

Guest editorial: Why your vote counts – a lot

Posted on October 31, 2016 |
By Haviland Smith

Those of us who are not highly partisan voters are faced this year with a choice between two unusually unattractive candidates. Some of us will take a deep breath, suck it up and vote for the one we believe to be less unattractive. Others say they simply will not vote at all.

The polls would seem to show that many of those who have made the decision not to vote are younger people who facing their first or second elections.

MIDDLEBURY — The Congregational Church of Middlebury will hold its annual Holiday Bazaar in Fellowship Hall, on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New for this year, the hugely popular attic treasures spaces will be expanded to a canopy covered outdoor area next to the Seymour Street entrance (weather permitting) to accommodate the increased number of items the church expects to have for sale.
