When I saw my older daughter walking away from the car after I dropped her off for her first middle school dance recently I felt a little tug of the heartstrings and knew that with every step she took she was going one step farther away from her daddy, one step closer to life on her own as an independent individual.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School seniors Sophie McKeever-Parkes and Kate DaPolito took a break from classes last month to do some traveling. But it’s not like they were on vacation; they were pitting their academic skills against fellow students from 28 countries at a spot almost halfway around the world.
BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School boys’ soccer team snapped a three-game losing skid in convincing fashion on Monday, scoring five unanswered second-half goals to defeat visiting Windsor, 7-1.
Winless Windsor cut into the Otters’ 2-0 lead in the second half’s first minute, when striker Brandon Tillman’s hard shot from the right side bounced in off OV senior goalie Shane Quenneville.
Next Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the most important campaign finance case since Citizens United. The case involves a challenge to a statute limiting the aggregate amount of money individuals may contribute to all federal candidates and party committees.

I first visited Banff National Park in 1985. I was 22, traveling with my parents, an older brother and his wife and two-year-old daughter, and one younger brother. We were working our way down the Rockies from a family reunion in British Columbia to the wedding in Boulder, Colo., of our other brother.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Joseph Ciaramitaro, 20, of Middlebury for possession of heroin following an investigation in the North Pleasant Street area on Sept. 26. Police said Ciaramitaro was also wanted on a warrant.
Police lodged Ciaramitaro at the Marble Valley Correctional Center.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Were informed that someone had stolen a bike from near the Ilsley Public Library on Main Street on Sept. 23.
VERGENNES — Vergennes police this past weekend cited two motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol and a third for a criminal count of driving with a suspended license.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, Vergennes police cited Ramesh Gurung, 23, of Burlington for DUI after receiving a cellphone alert of a southbound car on Route 7 being driven above the speed limit and crossing the center line.
