WALTHAM — In celebration of autumn in Vermont and wonderful new books by Vermont authors, Vergennes’ Bixby Library will host a series of hayrides and book talks at the Corcoran farm in Waltham on Sunday, Sept. 29. Children’s rides will be offered at 1 and 2 p.m., followed by an adult ride at 3 p.m. and a “sunset” ride at 4 p.m.
HANCOCK — Two years after Tropical Storm Irene, the lessons learned continue to play out across our region. One such lesson involves the need to increase local sheltering capacity. With its Local Disaster Shelter Initiative, the American Red Cross has moved past identification of the problem and for the past year has worked to address this shortfall one town at a time. In just the first year of the program, 40 communities and 600 volunteers across our region have been equipped and trained towns.
ADDISON — The 18th annual Open Atlatl Weekend will be held at the Chimney Point State Historic Site in Addison on the weekend of Sept. 20-22. The event includes an atlatl-making workshop on Friday, Sept. 20; the main championship event on Saturday, Sept. 21, when everyone from novices to some of the best in America compete; and demonstrations and workshops about ancient crafts and skills on Saturday and Sunday.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College Museum of Art opened the exhibition “Screened and Selected II: Contemporary Photography and Video Acquisitions 2006-2011” on Sept. 12.
MIDDLEBURY — Despite missing seven players either to injury or an academic trip abroad, the Middlebury Union High School girls’ soccer team improved to 2-0 on Saturday with its second 1-0 victory of the season, this time over visiting Stratton Mountain School.
The Tigers controlled play from start to finish, outshooting SMS by 24-6, showing purposeful play at midfield, and speed and smarts in the back.
ADDISON COUNTY — The Middlebury and Mount Abraham/Vergennes football teams posted road wins over the weekend, but Otter Valley came up short away from home in a pivotal Division III clash.
On Friday night, the 3-0 Tigers got their ground game going in a 28-6 D-I win at Colchester. Nick Felkl (156 yards on 11 carries) and Jakob Trautwein (133 yards on 12 attempts) rushed for almost 300 of the Tigers 397 yards, and each also scored two touchdowns.
ADDISON COUNTY — In area girls’ high school soccer play late last week, Vergennes won in overtime, while Mount Abraham and Otter Valley each split a pair of games.
The Commodores knocked off host Rice on Saturday, 1-0, in overtime when Tea Keifer knocked in the rebound of a penalty kick that Green Knight goalie Macie Sicard had stopped.
Commodore goalieK.C. Ambrose was credited with 25 saves as VUHS shut out Rice and evened its record at 2-2. Sicard stopped 10 shots for Rice.
ADDISON COUNTY — In area high school boys’ soccer action late last week, Middlebury, Vergennes and Otter Valley all came up short.
Mount Abraham (3-0) was idle. The Eagles will host Milton on Monday.
On Friday, defending Division I champion Champlain Valley Union remained unbeaten with an 8-0 win over visiting MUHS. Goalies Bo Tran andWilder Perera teamed up to make 13 saves for the rebuilding Tigers, who dropped to 0-4.
