Middlebury train tunnel project hits a wall

Posted on August 15, 2013 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury will probably have to find $1.5 million to bridge the funding gap between its preferred option of using a tunnel to replace two deteriorating downtown railroad spans, versus what the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is willing to invest in such a project.

That’s the latest word from Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials, who recently met with their FHWA counterparts to discuss the upcoming replacement of Middlebury’s railroad overpasses on Merchants Row and Main Street.

By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — A rare joint meeting on Tuesday of the Ferrisburgh selectboard and Ferrisburgh Central School board produced agreements to continue exploring a possible purchase of land that abuts both town and school property, and to evaluate whether balloting should be held in the town office building rather than at the school.

Orwell outhouse-1.jpg

ORWELL — Almost every day for the past month, an Orwell resident has awoken to find an outhouse on his or her front lawn that wasn’t there when they retired to bed the previous night.

Whether they welcomed the new facility in their yard or despised it, all knew that it was there for a good cause. A committee had organized the depositing of the old fashion port-a-potty around town as a way to raise money for this weekend’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Orwell town charter and to get people excited about the big party.

Vergennes Opera House - Fall-Winter 07 233.jpg

VERGENNES — In 1993, a couple feet above the Vergennes city offices a mixture of fallen plaster and pigeon droppings blanketed the abandoned Vergennes Opera House floor.

New Friends of the Vergennes Opera House (FVOH) interim president Gerianne Smart, then a volunteer and later a longtime FVOH head, remembers well the days when hard labor mixed with a distant vision for the future of the city’s theater, now well more than 100 years old.

Bristol narrows its search for a fire facility

Posted on August 15, 2013 |
By Xian Chiang-Waren

BRISTOL — Eleven proposed sites for the new location of the Bristol Fire Department’s headquarters have now been eliminated out of an original list of 31. The latest suggestion, that the station be built on two acres of town-owned property on Pine Street near the landfill and the highway department, was unanimously rejected by the selectboard at their Monday meeting. Board members rejected that site because of existing traffic problems on Pine Street and because town officials believe there aren’t two acres of unused land near the landfill site.
