VERGENNES — U.S. Department of Labor employees who receive one of the 2013 Secretary of Labor’s Honor Awards may have students from the Northlands Job Corps in Vergennes to thank for the award. Job Corps students and instructors from Northlands in Vergennes and from another Job Corps in Utah used recycling and sustainability in creating unique, handcrafted awards honoring the service and dedication of the federal DOL employees.
BRISTOL — Holiday weekends often seem to come and go too quickly, but those in the Bristol area can look forward to two celebratory weekends in a row.
This year, the fifth annual “Pocock Rocks!” music festival and street fair will be held on Saturday, June 1, the weekend after Memorial Day, on Main Street in Bristol.
“Attendance has grown each year,” said Carol Wells, executive director of the Bristol Downtown Community Partnership, which sponsors the event. “We try to tweak it a bit each year to improve even more.”
ADDISON COUNTY — This year’s United Way of Addison County Community Celebration event will be held on Thursday, May 30, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Vergennes Opera House. The main focus of this free, family-friendly event is to honor and thank those people who help their friends and neighbors achieve better lives by working with the United Way to make its campaign a success.
ADDISON COUNTY — Hiking Vermont’s hillsides is a great way to enjoy a warm spring day, but the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department and Audubon Vermont recommend you check to see if the area you’re planning to hike or climb is open. Several cliff areas — including four in Addison County — are currently closed to protect nesting peregrine falcons.
VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School softball team continued its march toward a high seed in Division I on Thursday, when the Commodores rode the two-hit pitching of junior Taylor Paquette past visiting Mount Abraham, 8-2.
VUHS improved to 10-4 and can clinch the No. 3 seed with wins in its final two games. The Commodores were set to visit Spaulding (9-4 as of Friday) on Saturday and will visit Middlebury (3-9 as of Friday) on Tuesday.

VERGENNES — A late-season match-up between the Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high school baseball teams always brings intrigue. A match-up with postseason standing implications is that much sweeter.
As rain clouds threatened on Thursday in Vergennes, VUHS pitcher Devin Hayes powered through seven innings of two-hit ball while striking out 10 in a 4-0 Commodore victory. With the win, the Commodores improved to 8-6 and solidified their hold on sixth place in Division III, while the Eagles dropped to 5-7.
Memorial Day was enacted to honor Union soldiers of the Civil War. It was set on May 30, near the day of reunification. The day was expanded after World War I to include all American casualties of any war or military action.
