The Tour de Farms offers three loop rides (approximately 10, 25 and 30 miles) and a family-friendly five-mile walking or biking option. MIDDLEBURY — A wayward — and unlucky — squirrel caused a widespread Sunday morning power outage in Middlebury that lasted more than an hour, a Green Mountain Power spokesperson said.

GMP’s Jeremy Baker said 1,652 customers served by the company’s downtown Middlebury substation in the Marble Works lost power at 7:42 a.m. on Sunday after the squirrel “made contact” with the top of a bank of transformers and shorted out their fuses.

From the ancient caves of Lascaux to the 21st century towers of Dubai, there has always been something magical about the ways in which humans convert nothingness into spaces for living.

Fascinating though the process may be, though, it rarely goes as planned. And sometimes it’s the unexpected wrinkles — the shelf in the wrong size that gets turned into a lovely coffee table, the windows placed too low but leaving room for paintings — it’s these little twists in the process that alchemize the mere physical object of a house into memories, and a home.

With elections coming up this fall you may have questions about them that the town clerk could answer. The town clerk’s office is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Wednesday evenings, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., or by appointment.

I always loved thunderstorms as a child. My favorite place to watch them was lakeside on vacations in Maine. I still enjoy a good thunderstorm now and then. But since the flood of 1998 — and since I moved into a house on the side of a hill in the middle of the woods — my feelings have changed.

Middlebury is on a roll.
