MIDDLEBURY — New scrutiny of Middlebury’s financial records reveals that the town does not possess a $1.5 million surplus as previously announced by local officials in late January.
MIDDLEBURY — Owners of the Edgewater Gallery at 1 Mill St., the former home of the Vermont State Craft Center, want to buy a small sliver of land from the adjacent town-owned Jessica Swift Park in order to expand their enterprise to include a new restaurant and two condominiums.
Cornwall resident George Dorsey of Edgewood Property Holdings, LLC purchased 1 Mill St. from the Frog Hollow Craft Association back on Oct. 1, 2009. Dorsey has substantially upgraded the building, which continues to house an art gallery.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated two suspected phone scams on Feb. 22. Police said a local woman reported receiving a call from a man alleging to be her grandson, who said he had been picked up for drunk driving and needed money. When the woman told the caller she did not sound like her grandson, he ended the call.
In the other case, a local man received a call from someone who alleged the man’s grandson had been involved in a car accident. When the man said he had no grandson, the caller hung up the phone.
VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Feb. 20 cited two men involved in the same incident for driving with suspended licenses, criminal offenses, citing one of the men twice.
The incident began when police checked a suspicious car at Champlain Farms on Main Street and discovered its license plates were assigned to a different vehicle. They then cited the operator, George Hallock Jr., 28, of Waltham, for a criminal DLS (driving with license suspended), as well as ticketed him for driving an unregistered and uninsured car with unassigned plates.
ADDISON COUNTY — Five Addison County towns are weighing whether they should join a program that aims to make it easier for property owners to obtain financing for energy efficiency improvements
On Town Meeting Day, residents in Ferrisburgh, Middlebury, Monkton, Ripton and Weybridge will vote on articles that would make their respective towns Property Assessed Clean Energy, or PACE, districts.
