Bristol Police Log: Thefts, car collisions and fights investigated

BRISTOL — In the past two weeks, Bristol police have dealt with a variety of incidents, including ones involving unruly citizens, thefts and sick people and animals.

During the period Bristol police:

  On Oct. 31 received a report that a credit card was stolen and used at two banks in the village.

After explosion, Otter Creek brews again

MIDDLEBURY — As sirens sped toward Otter Creek Brewing of Exchange Street Monday morning, hundreds of gallons of amber-colored beer soaked slowly into the earth.

It might seem like a scene from a beer-lover’s nightmare, but the 40-barrel fermenting tank that exploded inside the Middlebury brewery around 10 a.m. was no figment of the imagination. The explosion damaged pipes and another tank, blowing out an outside wall panel and dumping beer across the brewery floor and the parking lot outside.

Weather Watch: Looks Cold, Feels Warm

The view out my window yesterday gave every appearance of a cold November day. Bare trees rose towards a slate grey sky, branches wiggling stiffly in the wind as brown leaves swirled on the sidewalk. It was quite possible to imagine a snowstorm was on the way... until I stepped outside.

Beer tank explodes at Otter Creek

Update 11/15/11, 3 p.m.: Vermont Public Radio reports that normal brewing operations resumed at the Middlebury factory on Tuesday afternoon.

A beer tank at Otter Creek Brewing exploded around 10 a.m. on Monday, according to Middlebury fire chief Rick Cole.

Survey examines sex, drug and health risks to local teens

ADDISON COUNTY — How many local teenagers drink and drive? How many Addison County high school students have had sex? Of that number, what percentage used a condom? Do middle school students really consider suicide?

These are just some of the questions that a statewide risk survey has sought to answer for more than a decade.

MIDDLEBURY — A frozen vegetable operation. A bistro that serves up local, vegetarian foods. A wood chip-fired kiln to heat and power a small business. By all accounts, Addison County boasts a veritable goldmine of creativity in the food, agriculture and forestry arenas — the so-called “working landscape.”

But that energy can go nowhere without funding.
