GOSHEN — Next Tuesday, Aug. 24, those who turn out to cast primary election votes in Goshen also will find four town-related items on the ballot.
The first item is a proposal to change the town’s trash pick-up arrangement. Currently, the town makes arrangements with an outside contractor to deal with trash pick-up, but in recent months it has run across difficulties enforcing rules on what can and can’t get picked up.
MIDDLEBURY — Anais Mitchell, Moira Smiley and Abigail Nessen Bengson are all versatile, up-and-coming musical artists who regularly perform in venues across the country.
They also have something else in common.
All three can trace their musical lineage to a common stage — the Bridge School in Middlebury, where their artistic talents were nurtured in a converted dairy barn off Middlebury’s Exchange Street.
Ah, defense. No, it’s not the Breakfast of Champions, but it’s the essence of champions, the sine qua non, which loosely translates as without it you hit the golf courses early.

NEW HAVEN — A good crowd once again packed the main show tent at Addison County Fair and Field Days for the Friday evening armwrestling competition, which in its 31st year drew 126 adults and 127 youths to test their strength and skill.
Organizer Karen Brisson, a former U.S. and world champion who started helping her father Armond Brisson run the event 31 years ago, said the number of competitors and the size of the crowd for the popular event roughly equaled 2009’s totals.
MIDDLEBURY — Steve Dupoise Sr. is banking on a new business chugging into Middlebury’s former train station at 29 Seymour St. once he has completed substantial repairs to the historic structure.
Workers on Monday were busy shoring up the foundation to the 109-year-old building, one of several improvements aimed at making the former train station more attractive to prospective tenants while honoring its historic integrity.

My last last few blogged runs were on the long side, requiring a fairly high degree of organization and car shuttling to pull off, making them relatively rare treats for those with a little extra time on their hands. This run, however, requires much less choreography – just a short drive up the mountain from Middlebury to get to the trailhead, and thus can be done without a lot of extra driving. This is also a relatively straightforward “up and down” route, on easy to follow trails, requiring no map, and not a lot of knowledge of the topography. The catch?

Editor’s note: Addison County Fair and Field Days provides a calliope of sights and sounds that tantalize the senses and tickle the imagination, and the 62nd annual edition last week was no exception. As always, the five-day event proved too much to capture in one place, but we’re presenting a few verbal snapshots from the fairgrounds along with some of Trent Campbell’s fantastic photographs so you can relive the experiences and hopefully make plans to attend next year.
