City OKs $1.75M for firefighting equipment

Vergennes residents on Tuesday backed a proposal to bond for up to $1.75 million for the city’s fire department to spend on replacing a 21-year-old heavy rescue truck and a 25-year-old ladder truck. The vote tally was 90-64 in low turnout. Around 7.2% of registered voters participated.

Vergennes voters soon will weigh in on a $2.35 million bond to pay for two new trucks for the city’s fire department and to refurbish a third. 

Two area fire departments, Middlebury and Vergennes, have Technical Rescue Teams trained to do both swift-water and mountain rescues — and they have put their swift-water training to use over the past two months. 

The floods that struck Vermont this summer show why the Middlebury and Vergennes fire departments have Technical Rescue Teams capable of acting in fast-moving water. 

In a unanimous decision followed by a standing ovation from both councilors and about 15 meeting attendees, the Vergennes City Council on May 9 confirmed interim Vergennes Volunteer Fire Department Chief David DiBiase as the head of the department.
