Top D-I teams skate past MUHS boys

The Division II Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team lost a pair of games to the top two teams in D-I last week, dropping the Tigers’ record to 5-10-1 heading into a Wednesday home game vs. Colchester played after deadline for this issue.

The Division II MUHS girls’ hockey team performed well on Friday against a top D-I team, South Burlington, but the more experienced Wolves prevailed.

The host Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team erupted in Tuesday’s second quarter to take charge against Middlebury in what can be fairly called a surprisingly one-sided 55-31 win over the Commodores’ regional rival. 

Back in the 20th century Middlebury Union High School was a power in Vermont alpine skiing. Between 1994 and 1998 the Tiger girls’ and boys’ teams combined for three Vermont titles, three second-place finishes, and five thirds.

The Division II Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team split a pair of one-goal road games last week and stood at 9-7 heading into a Wednesday game at D-I’s first-place team, the Kingdom Blades, based in St. Johnsbury.

The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team on Monday battled Division I Burr & Burton Academy to a 3-3 tie in a back-and-forth contest.

Two trends continued, one of them happier than the other, when the Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team shut down visiting Mount Abraham in the second half of Thursday’s game on the way to a 48-30 victory. 

Despite being shorthanded due to a key injury on Monday, the Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team showed grit while hanging with visiting Missisquoi until the late going, when the T-Birds pulled away for 45-29 victory. 

The Middlebury Union High School wrestling team swept six dual meets last week, moving its dual meet record to 11-1, according to Coach Ethan Raymond. 

A pair of Division I losses last week dropped the Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team below .500 for the first time this season at 4-5.

Visiting Harwood prevailed over a shorthanded Middlebury Union High School gymnastics team in a Jan. 18 dual meet, 87.9-58.2.

The Middlebury Union High School girls were the top two individual placers in a Nordic ski race they hosted on Saturday at the Rikert Outdoor Center, but their team settled for a second-place finish. Meanwhile, the Tiger boys were third in a bigger field … (read more)
