Panther softball claims five out of six games

The Middlebury team is 20-2 on the season, 4-0 in their conference.

The Panthers touted a 15-1 record ahead of a Wednesday pair against Keene State College.

Twenty softball players total from the Mount Abraham, Middlebury, Otter Valley and Vergennes union high school teams received postseason recognition from the Lake Division or the Southern Valley League’s B Division.

It took 10 innings to decide Saturday’s Division II softball final between No. 1 Lyndon and No. 2 Mount Abraham at Vermont State University-Castleton.

The No. 3 Otter Valley softball team entered its Division II semifinal in Bristol against No. 2 Mount Abraham riding a 12-game winning streak and carrying an impressive 15-3 record.

The No. 2 Mount Abraham and No. 3 Otter Valley softball teams rolled into the Division II playoffs semifinal round, but No. 8 Middlebury saw its quarterfinal upset bid fall just short.

The Mount Abraham Union High School softball team continued marching toward a top-four Division II seed on Tuesday, when the Eagles defeated host Middlebury, 13-4, in a game that was more competitive than the score might indicate.

In recent local high school softball action limited by more wet weather, Mount Abraham and Middlebury both picked up road wins, while Division III Vergennes came up short against two top D-II teams.

In a week of local high school softball action curtailed by rainy weather, Mount Abraham picked up a win by defeating Otter Valley in the Eagles’ only outing, Middlebury split two games, and Vergennes picked up its first victory.

The Middlebury Union High School softball team broke into the win column in a big way on Tuesday by defeating host Champlain Valley, 20-5 in six innings, a result that followed a road loss to Colchester late last week.

The Mount Abraham Union High School softball team breezed past host Spaulding on Tuesday afternoon, 12-0 in five innings, to remain unbeaten in the early going.
