Letter to the editor: Reduce light pollution to preserve Vermont’s fireflies

Do you remember fireflies from your childhood? Tiny flashing lights in the fields and woods, in the green grass?

It happens on a warm June evening: in the darkening field near my house, I notice a brief flicker of light. Then another. And another.

“Sometimes we are so possessive of the earth that we want to use up all of its offerings, but we should remember that we are all only on earth for a very short time. It’s not something that we own but something that we are renting for a very short while.”
