Collected deer teeth pinpoint accurate age

RUTLAND — Hunters who provided the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department with a tooth from their deer can now find out how old their deer was by visiting the department’s website. A total of 1,966 usable deer teeth were received from successful hunters in 2023. When added to the 952 deer examined by biologists during the youth and regular November seasons, the department was able to get accurate ages for 2,918 deer. Despite a record-breaking November rifle season in which hunters had 676 bucks weighed locally, 2023 ultimately proved to be a below-average year for the overall number of deer killed and handled at Addison County wildlife reporting stations.

The deer rifle season got off to a strong start this past weekend with an above-average total of 244 bucks handled at eight Addison County big-game reporting stations.

Hunters may take one legal buck during this season if they did not already take one during the archery deer season.

Vermont’s 16-day regular deer season begins Saturday, Nov. 11, and ends Sunday, Nov. 26. 

Vermont’s upcoming archery deer hunting season will run from Sunday, Oct. 1- Friday, Nov.10 and Monday, Nov. 27 to Friday, Dec. 15

After a slow start to Vermont’s 16-day rifle season for deer locally, hunters brought a near-record number of bucks to be weighed at Addison County’s wildlife reporting stations.

Many hunters were successful locally as Vermont’s 16-day rifle season for deer opened this past weekend — but not as many as in most recent seasons.

Eighty-eight young and first-time hunters brought deer they’d shot to Addison County’s wildlife reporting stations during Youth Hunting Weekend on Oct. 22-23.

Hunters are gearing up for the start of Vermont’s traditionally popular 16-day regular deer season that begins Saturday, November 12, and ends Sunday, November 27. 

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is asking hunters for help gathering biological data on the state’s deer population.
