Women’s hoop wins one, loses one

The Middlebury College women’s basketball team split a pair of games this past weekend at a tournament hosted by Williams College.

The Middlebury College men’s basketball team recently dropped a pair of close games to open its season. 

The annual Mayhem Basketball Camp, cosponsored by the Middlebury Mayhem AAU Basketball Program and the Middlebury Parks & Recreation Department, will be held in the Middlebury Recreation Center off Creek Road, between July 24 and 28. 

A dozen Mount Abraham, Middlebury, Vergennes and Otter Valley union high school boys’ basketball players received postseason recognition from either the Lake Division or the Southern Valley League.

Eight players from the Mount Abraham, Middlebury, Vergennes and Otter Valley girls’ basketball teams received postseason recognition from the Lake Division or Southern Vermont League.

The host Middlebury College men’s basketball team dominated the second half of Friday’s first-round NCAA Division III tournament game against Worcester State in rolling to a 76-51 victory. 

In games played on Tuesday in the first round of the high school Division II boys’ basketball playoffs, Mount Abraham prevailed at home, while Middlebury and Otter Valley dropped road games and saw their seasons come to a close.

The No. 6 Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team on Tuesday closed out its first-round Division III playoff game with a 14-3 run to subdue stubborn No. 11 seed Peoples, 61-46. 

Despite the Panthers’ recent first-round upset loss in the NESCAC tournament, the 19-5 Middlebury College men’s basketball team not only received a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, it will also host a four-team regional this Friday and Saturday.

The girls’ basketball season came to an end for local high schools this past weekend.

Mount Abe clinched a home Division II playoff date with a 53-50 victory on Thursday night at Middlebury.
