Program brings 1777 medicine to life

ORWELL — Few people know that the largest hospital built by Americans during the Revolutionary War was at Mount Independence in Orwell. The Mount Independence State Historic Site cranks up the time machine on Sunday, July 28, at 2 p.m. to explore the story of health and medicine during the revolution on Mount Independence with the program, “An Investigation Into the Revolutionary Mind: What Were You Thinking, Dr. Jonathan Potts?”

Guided tours offered across Lake Champlain Bridge July 28

ADDISON — The managers of the Chimney Point, Vt., and Crown Point, N.Y., state historic sites will host a guided walk on Sunday, July 28, at 1 p.m., leaving from the Crown Point State Historic Site museum. Walkers should allow at least two hours. Walk leaders Tom Hughes and Elsa Gilbertson will take participants across and back on the bridge, and will show them the 9,000 years of human history at this important and beautiful location on Lake Champlain.

Former Weybridge clerk sentenced to two years in jail

WEYBRIDGE — U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss on Thursday, July 18, sentenced former Weybridge Town Clerk Karen Brisson to two years in prison, along with an order to pay her community and its insurance company $431,812.06 in restitution. The sentence was in response to Brisson’s guilty plea to having embezzled funds from the town’s coffers over a period of at least six years.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s offer to provide $5.5 million to the town of Middlebury to help construct a new municipal building and gym comes a year and a half after the institution offered $2.875 million in aid for a similar project, according to Selectman Craig Bingham, who this week decided to divulge the proposal that he said was discussed and rejected by the board during a Dec. 6, 2011, executive session meeting.

Loans help three local food businesses get bigger

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) will issue loans that will allow three area businesses to ramp up their respective production of croutons, whiskey and a traditional Indian smoothie called “lassi.”

Robin Scheu, executive director of the ACEDC, confirmed on Monday her organization will lend a combined total of around $120,000 to Olivia’s Croutons of New Haven, DAHlicious Lassi of Shoreham and the new Appalachian Gap Distillery in Middlebury’s industrial park.

Rep. Welch calls House Farm Bill a 'stunt'

ST. ALBANS — The House of Representatives passed a stripped down Farm Bill last Thursday night without dairy programs and food stamps. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., called it “a political stunt.”

The bill passed 216-208, without a single Democrat supporting it.

“This is less a Farm Bill than a leadership designed train wreck,” said Welch. “This has got all the earmarks of a political fix.”

The bill was debated under rules prohibiting legislators from offering amendments.
