UVM EXTENSION MASTER Gardeners Shari Johnson, Ann Collins and Barbara Greenwood have created and maintained the Cornwall Elementary School garden over the growing season. Freshly picked bite-size and slicing tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, green beans and onions fed students in a summer program at the school. This month the kindergarteners will harvest the pumpkins. Giant sunflowers welcome garden visitors. Additional work was done to weed an overgrown blueberry patch. Four bushes were cleared and staked. A major removal of weeds was also accomplished to establish a wildflower patch adjacent to the vegetable raised beds. Photos courtesy of Jill Vickers
BEFORE OUR SPATE of excellent fall weather plunged into seasonably chilly weather late this week, the branch of a sumac plant seemed to be bowing in thanks to the blue sky and bright sun over the Champlain Valley this past Sunday. Independent photo/John S. McCright

A SUNRISE ORCHARDS worker collects apples from a tree at the Cornwall orchard. Local apple growers have reported a plentiful crop this fall, following a challenging growing season filled with weather-related obstacles in 2023. Independent photo/Steve James
HALLOWEEN LOVERS ARE gearing up for the scariest night of the year. The owners of this Middlebury home are really getting into the spirit. Your kids can get in the mood at this Sunday’s Spooktacular — check out the calendar for details. Independent photo/John S. McCright
