Seeing a field of lacquered yellow buttercups like this one is a treat in Vermont during the late spring and early summer. Independent photo/John S. McCright
Bridport’s Craig Duddles, seen this spring outside the Henry Sheldon Museum where the Middlebury Garden Club was tidying up the beds, is the editor of the club’s newsletter, “Garden Thymes.” At its annual meeting in St. Albans earlier this month, the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont (FGCV) awarded first place in the statewide newsletter competition to “Garden Thymes,” which is published quarterly. The FGCV assists the 16 member garden clubs in Vermont, encourages educational programs in horticulture, landscape design, and related fields and promotes natural resource conservation.
A double rainbow reigns over Vermont’s green landscape just south of Middlebury late on Sunday. It is some consolation for the delayed gardening and rained-out outdoor activities. Photo by Brian Joslin

Unexpected delay: Traffic was slowed around Court Square in Middlebury on Friday morning as a Green Mountain Power crew fixed a power outage that lasted from 7:30 a.m. until around 9:30 a.m. An official said a wire on a pole in the square had burst into flames and caused the outage. While homes and businesses in the immediate area dealt with their outage, cars and trucks were slowed, but no major delays appeared to take place. Independent photo/John S. McCright
