Photos of the week: July 2, 2026

Jul 2, 2026 | Photos of the Week

Most people have heard that milkweed is important to the health of monarch butterflies, in part because it is the sole source of nutrition for caterpillars of this species. Here is proof seen last week in a Weybridge yard, where this caterpillar has already devoured the right half of this milkweed leaf and getting a start on the left. Photo by Susan Humphrey
Vergennes firefighters Zach Gebo, left, and Walker Randall practice putting on a self-contained breathing apparatus during a training exercise in the Vergennes fire station last week. They wore cowls over their heads to simulate the process in a smoke-filled building with no visibility. Local volunteer firefighters do hundreds of hours of training. Independent photo/John S.
