Hot chili warms up a cold day

MIDDLEBURY — The 9th Annual Vermont Chili Festival is officially in the books. Nearly 2,500 hearty souls braved a brisk wind and record-setting temperatures in the teens to sample chili made by local vendors, both professional and amateur.

Forum on anti-Semitism to be held this Sunday

Two Brothers gets a facelift

MIDDLEBURY — One afternoon last week, in the newly renovated kitchen of Two Brothers Tavern’s underground Lounge, executive chef Matt Corrente prepped one Neapolitan pizza after another to the cranked-up backdrop of Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.” Surrounded by boxes and soon-to-be installed equipment, Corrente moved about the new kitchen space, whose chic black walls create an open facade that protrudes out of the corner next to the bar.

'Shop Hop' to feature quilters guild quilt

MIDDLEBURY — Once again the Milk & Honey Quilters’ Guild is preparing for a wonderful quilt show and the first item on their agenda was to make a quilt for their raffle.

Emmy Alford and Janice Gould volunteered to design the quilt and did so by modifying a pattern that they both admired. With a two-day workshop and willing workers, cutting, sewing and pressing quilt blocks the guild members came up with a spectacular quilt.

Saplings and seedlings now available to order from Otter Creek Conservation District

MIDDLEBURY — The Otter Creek Natural Resources Conservation District is sponsoring its Annual Tree/Seedling Program for area residents and cooperators. This program was developed for the convenience of area residents and proceeds help support on-going conservation projects. 

Possible uses for the seedlings are home orchards, windbreaks, Christmas trees, ornamental and wildlife habitat.

Co-Director of Harvard Stem Cell Institute to speak March 20

MIDDLEBURY — Human stem cells are a relatively new discovery in biomedicine. How were these cells discovered and what is their potential?

Harvard University’s Douglas Melton will address this question in a March 20 lecture at Middlebury College titled, “The promise of stem cells for cures and improved human health.”

This talk will consider the biology of stem cells and point to potential applications for new treatments of diabetes, brain and other diseases as well as enabling longer and healthier lives.

Middlebury-area teachers and board at impasse on new contract

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central School District directors have declared an impasse in negotiations for a new contract for the newly unified district’s combined 230 teachers, and the two sides will now pick an independent mediator in an effort to make progress.

Peter Conlon, chairman of the ACSD board, stressed that declaring impasse doesn’t mean talks have ended; it simply means the two sides need some assistance in resolving their differences on three major contract areas: pay increases, health coverage and length of school day.

Porter building 'express' clinic for urgent care

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center has begun construction on a new clinic that will serve people requiring immediate medical services, but who do not require the resources of an emergency department.

It’s going to be called “Porter Express Care,” and it is now being built into a 1,600-square-foot space within Porter’s Collins Building.

River Watch to hold water-sampling training on March 18

MIDDLEBURY — In the midst of March’s tug-o-war between winter and spring, the citizen-science group that monitors local rivers is gearing up for the 2017 season. Addison County River Watch Collaborative, an organization of about thirty volunteers and scientists, has been busy this winter reviewing last summer’s sampling data, meeting with local conservation commissions and other groups to discuss possible improvements in water quality, and strategizing about the best places to focus their water-sampling efforts this spring and summer.
