Editorial: What's to be gained in upgrading wetland's status

The petition to reclassify the 15,500-acre Otter Creek Wetland Complex from a Class II status to Class I poses some interesting questions as to what is to be gained, but at the very least the months of discussion that is likely to ensue will teach Addison County residents about the invaluable functions and “irreplaceable values” of what is the state’s largest wetland. Letter to the editor: Creek Road best managed as recreation path

In the coming weeks, Middlebury will host a public hearing on the future of Creek Road. The road has sustained repeated damage in recent years as a result of flooding, erosion, and subsidence. A portion of the road is currently closed to vehicles. As the selectboard ponders the future of the road, I encourage them to make an investment that could improve both the health and appeal of our town.

Ruby Ball is the Addy Indy Softball Player of the Year

ADDISON COUNTY — It was another spring and another Division II title for the Mount Abraham Union High School softball team, the program’s third straight.

Unsurprisingly Coach Don McCormick’s 15-4 Eagles are well represented on the 2019 Addison Independent Softball All-Star Team. A contingent of five Eagle Independent all-stars is led by senior pitcher and dangerous hitter Ruby Ball, the 2019 Independent Softball Player of the Year.

Middlebury River threatening to flood, Route 125 closed

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Torrential downpours throughout the day on Thursday have washed out portions of Route 125 between East Middlebury and Ripton, forcing closure of the road and detours on the Dugway.

Meanwhile, local fire officials have called for a water rescue team to remain on standby and at 3:30 p.m. were contemplating an emergency evacuation of parts of East Middlebury in response to a swollen Middlebury River.

Locals lead search for Lake Seneca shipwrecks

FERRISBURGH — Addison County researchers are leading a two-week effort to map the bottom of Seneca Lake in New York State, a project that could uncover dozens of shipwrecks and re-write the history of the lake as a 19th-century commercial waterway.

VERGENNES — Going to the movies is definitely different now than it used to be back in the time of Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant and other classic Hollywood stars. Back when the red carpet was rolled out, the finest duds adored and, oh, the afterparties. Nowadays we plop on the couch, flip on Netflix and browse until we give up declaring there’s “nothing good to watch anymore.”

Lincoln revives its theater tradition by staging a '20s comedy

LINCOLN — Two Lincoln institutions — the Burnham Foundation and resident Harriett “Hattie” Brown — both celebrated 100th birthdays this year. Thanks to a dedicated group of community members, those milestones will intersect this weekend.

“Silas Takes the Air,” a 1927 play set in small-town New England and written by Donald Jacobus, opens Friday night at Lincoln’s Burnham Hall, followed by a second performance of the comedy on Saturday. Both shows begin at 7 p.m.
