BRIDPORT — Grace Kavanaugh, 75, of Bridport, died May 16, 2021. She was born in New York, N.Y., March 1, 1946. She is survived by her husband, Richard Kavanaugh; her daughter, Lisa; and her son, Sean. Contributions in her name may be made to Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society.◊

Dear mama,

I cannot find another way to share your life, but to write this letter of love to you.

I’ve loved you always, you have given me and Seany Boy everything that is good about ourselves. You have done your job well because we always felt the deepness and comfort of your love. You gave us a playful heart, you taught us right from wrong. We learned to be generous and humble, to share and care for the earth and all its creatures. Strength, respect and appreciation were learned from following your example, and for that we are so, so grateful to you mama. For those lucky enough to truly know you, we were inspired by your truth and tenacity, your wisdom, kindness and generosity. We will carry these precious gifts outward for the rest of our lives.

Mama, you have been amazing to so many and in so many ways, but today I am blue and sad and missing you. I’ll wash my face and stand up straight and try to calm down, like you’ve told me a thousand times and I’ll take comfort knowing that you’re dancing with your McGee at the end of the rainbow bridge, while friends and family from long ago laugh and cheer and celebrate your spirit.

We have always loved you and always will.

Someday the sun will shine again for us and the flowers will smile. I promise we will be safe and smart and do good things. I love you so, so much.
