Expert to guide wild mushroom walk

MEG MADDEN

ORWELL — Interested in mushrooms that grow in the wild? On Sunday, Aug. 22, starting at 1 p.m. at Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, join naturalist, mycologist, and professional photographer Meg Madden for a curiosity walk along the hiking trails.

Madden will help you delve into the fascinating world of fungi and how to identify wild mushrooms. As a myco-educator Meg loves to share her knowledge of the natural world, particularly when it comes to all things fungi.

Madden, a Middlebury native, channels her lifelong passion for art and nature into her colorful, textural, and highly detailed photographs of mushrooms and other fascinating organisms discovered on her hikes around Vermont. She shares her photos and knowledge of the natural world on her popular Instagram account @megmaddendesign, and her photos are seen in mushroom identification apps, online photography tutorials, and in print and web-based educational materials.

The program is included in the regular museum admission of $5 per adult. Children under 15 and Mount Independence Coalition members enter free. Wear appropriate footwear for walking on the forested paths, dress for the weather, and bring water. The program is sponsored by the Mount Independence Coalition, friends group for the historic site.
