North Branch runner excels as local teams vie in Randolph
RANDOLPH — Middlebury Union High School runners posted several top-20 results at Saturday’s Randolph Invitational, while North Branch School 9th-grader Estella Laird’s third-place finish in the girls’ race was the best result for a local athlete.
Tigers Ella Landis, in 12th overall, and Baxter Harringon, in 19th overall, had the top finishes for the MUHS girls’ and boys’ teams, respectively.
For the Eagles, Abigail Johnson and Noah Engfall led the way.
Laird finished third with a time of 19:58; she was one of only three female runners to crack 20 minutes.
There were 175 runners in girls’ race and 215 in the boys’ race.
The Tiger girls finished fifth in a 12-team field with 133 points; Harwood (31) and Champlain Valley (61) ran 1-2. The Eagle girls were ninth (261).
The Tiger girls’ scorers and their overall finishes were: 12. Landis, 21:21.13; Beth MacIntosh, 21:47.91; 20. Ava Schneider, 21:50.09; 52. Fairley Olson, 23:34.9; 72. Ari Graham-Gurland, 24:54.
The Eagle girls’ scorers and their overall finishes were: 43. Johnson, 22:47.54; 63. Kayla Friend, 24:15.25; 90. Isabella Shea, 25.49.76; 97. Maisy Hill, 26:14.38; 127. Ruby Jean Hall, 28:01.11.
The Tiger boys were seventh in a 16-team field with 186 points. BFA (50) and CVU (70) paced the field. The Mount Abe boys scored 324 and were 11th.

The Eagle boys’ scorers and their overall finishes were: 51. Engvall, 19:32.44; 63. Gus Hill, 20:28.68; 80. Abel Atocha, 20:54.53; 91. Norman Benoit, 21:18.16; 106. Sean Davison, 21.42.8.
