Leicester schedules revote on school budget for Tuesday, April 9

LEICESTER — Residents here will return to the polls on Tuesday, April 9, to vote on a revised spending plan for the Leicester School District.
The school board is proposing a revised budget of $1,117,640 for fiscal year 2013-14. That represents a spending increase of $56,982, or 5.4 percent, over the $1,060,658 budgeted for the current year.
The board’s first offering was rejected by voters on Town Meeting Day by eight votes, 73-65. That $1,127,521 spending plan would have raised the budget by $66,863, or 6.3 percent.
The Leicester School Board has cut just under $10,000 from the original budget in administrative salaries and costs associated with the vacant school nurse position, which will be filled in the future at a lower salary.
The revised proposal would raise the residential tax rate from $1.32 to $1.39, or about a penny less than the prior proposed budget.
An informational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 8, in the Leicester Meeting House. Residents will vote on April 9 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the town offices.
