Cornwall baker is maple dessert recipe winner

SHOREHAM — The winning entry in the first Sugarhouse Dessert Contest at the Vermont Trade Winds Farm during the annual Maple Open House weekend was Sue Record of Cornwall with her fabulous Maple Sugar Pound Cake with browned sugar maple glaze.
“It was moist and delicious,” said Loraine Hescock, of Trade Winds Farm.
Hescock said the sugarhouse off Route 74 in Shoreham had nine bakers bring in their maple dessert and recipes for the contest on Saturday, March 23. Sugarhouse visitors got to sample all of the contestants’ baked entries and vote.
The list of entries include Vermont Maple Tiramisu, Maple Coconut Black ’N’ White Cookies, Mini Maple Cream Puffs, Rocky Road Cookies, Maple Pumpkin Cupcakes, Chocolate Chip Maple Bars, Maple Walnut Squares, Maple Toffee and Walnut Coffee Cake.
For her winning pound cake entry, Record won a gallon of Vermont maple syrup — and bragging rights. She said the secret to her recipe is maple sugar and buttermilk (“it keeps it moist”).
Hescock considered the first recipe contest a success and said that if “it becomes popular, we would have to start a Vermont Trade Winds Farm dessert cookbook.” For now, she said she plans to put the dessert recipes on the company’s website, www.vermonttradewinds.com.
Record, too, enjoyed the day.
“It was a lot of fun,” she said.
