Mount Abe boys’ soccer wins MUHS tourney

MIDDLEBURY — The Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team improved to 6-0 and won Middlebury’s annual J.P. Carrara tournament late last week.
The Eagles knocked off Milton in Saturday’s final, 1-0, after working overtime to beat Vergennes in Thursday’s first round. VUHS prevailed in Saturday’s consolation, 2-1, over MUHS, which fell to Milton on Thursday, 4-2.
EAGLES WIN
In Saturday’s final, the Eagles picked their second win over Milton (1-5-1) of the week, 1-0. Unlike the first victory, by 6-1 on Monday, Saturday’s game was a defensive battle decided by one strike, Theo Weaver’s 25-yard bomb that he unleashed after taking a Charlie Mayer free throw. That was the only one of six Eagle shots that Milton goalie Nate Dooley did not stop, while the Eagles’ Ira Fisher worked a two-save shutout. Milton dropped to 1-5-1.
VUHS VS. MUHS
In the consolation, VUHS (2-3) rode a big first half to a 2-1 win over the 1-6 Tigers. The Commodores took a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Josh Benning andLiam Hayes, but the Tigers pressed in the second half and got one back when Calder Birdsey knocked the ball in during a goal-mouth scramble.
EAGLES VS. VUHS
On Thursday, the Commodores scored first and pushed the Eagles to two overtimes. Liam Godfrey’s first-half goal off a corner kick gave VUHS the lead, but Rider MacCrellish, assisted by Aiden White-Pifer, equalized in the second half. Two minutes into the second overtime, Ethan White netted the game-winner off another White-Pifer feed. VUHS goalie Dylan Raymond made seven saves.
