Crosswalk monitors needed for Walk to School Day

MIDDLEBURY — Crosswalk monitors are needed for the Walk/Bike to School Day in Middlebury on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Join children and adults around the world to celebrate the benefits of walking and biking.
CROSSWALK MONITORS NEEDED (Oct. 9, 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.)
Volunteers (12) needed to monitor crosswalk intersections along Route 7/ Cross Street/ Merchants Row during school arrival time. Meet at Mary Hogan School entrance at 7:30 a.m. for Safe Routes to School reflective vest and crosswalk location assignment.
Return vest by 8:30 a.m. Crosswalk monitors do not escort students, but simply ensure that children know the rules of road before crossing. Contact Laura Asermily ([email protected]) if you can help.
REWARD VOLUNTEERS NEEDED (Oct. 9, 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.)
Volunteers (4) are also needed to pass out reward stickers and Cliff Bar fruit roll ups to students as they arrive at school.
TEACH RULES OF ROAD
Pedestrians cross at marked crosswalks, wait for signals, look first, walk against traffic bearing on roadsides when no sidewalks. Cyclists ride with traffic bearing far right as possible, yield to pedestrians, walk bikes on downtown sidewalks (Main Street, Merchants Row), stop at stop signs, signal turns with arms, use lights/reflectors at night. Drivers slow down for, yield to walkers and cyclists, don’t text and drive. Walkers hit by cars at 40 mph have 15 percent survival rate while those hit at 20 mph have 85 percent chance of survival.
BENEFITS OF WALKING & BIKING
Reduces traffic, enhances health, improves air quality, deepen commitment to neighborhood, helps test for safe routes.
