Ten locals ran in Boston Marathon

BOSTON — Ten Addison County residents were among the 36,000 athletes who ran in Monday’s historic Boston Marathon, a year after bombs killed three and injured more than 260 at the Boylston Street finish line.
The number of runners exceeded the 2013 total by about 9,000, and a crowd some estimates pegged at a larger-than-typical 1 million gathered along the route to cheer on the athletes.
That crowd saw the first American male winner since 1983, 38-year-old Meb Keflezighi, who held off a late charge by perennial contender Wilson Chebet to prevail by 11 seconds. And they saw Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo repeat, this time setting a women’s course record.
The top men’s Vermont finisher was Burlington’s David Sinclair, who ran the 26.2-mile course in 2:36.02; and the top Vermont woman was Colchester’s Meghan Lout in 2:58:53.
The county runners who heard the million-strong cheers on the route from Hopkinton to Boston and their times were:
•  Todd J. Smith, Bristol, 2:55.42.
•  Jason Shugart, Vergennes, 3:03.20.
•  Josh E. Hummel, Middlebury, 3:04.03.
•  Benjamin R. Bruno, Middlebury, 3:05.53.
•  Ryan Wakefield, Middlebury, 3:07.09.
•  Scott Reiss, New Haven, 3:39.15.
•  Kaelin Mackey, Cornwall, 3:59:59.
•  Bonnie Keeler, Middlebury, 4:41:30.
•  Katree Fenster, Weybridge, 4:51:52.
•  Jim Pugh, Cornwall, 5:12.46.
