WEST HAVEN — New York teen Jessey Mueller won the 30-lap Bond Auto Parts Modified features on Friday at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, his second win of the year.
Fletcher’s Joey Roberts took second, and Middlebury’s Todd Stone, the defending track champion, was third. Leon Gonyo took fourth, followed by Brandon’s Vince Quenneville Jr.
The only local winner was Addison’s Gerald Grant, who drove his 2013 Toyota Tundra pickup truck to victory in the street-legal Spectator Races portion of the program. Grant, a deputy in Addison County Sheriff’s Department, entered in the one-on-one elimination races and defeated Cliff Jagodzinski of Center Rutland in a 2004 Nissan Altima in the final round.
Grant had been given free admission to the Devil’s Bowl annual “Hometown Heroes” event honoring all military, veterans, law enforcement, and first responder personnel with complementary tickets.
Joining Mueller as NASCAR Whelen All-American Series feature winners on the night were Jamie Fisher, Stephen Donahue, and John McCarron.
Former Thunder Road track champion Fisher of Shelburne won the 30-lap Late Model feature race, with Bristol’s Josh Masterson taking second. Unofficially, Masterson now holds a slim two-point lead in the early championship standings, with Fisher and two points behind.
McCarron broke into the winner’s circle in a special three-segment, cumulatively scored event for the Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stock division. The New York driver posted a win and two third-place finishes in the three 10-lap segments for a total low score of seven points to take the overall win.
Mini Stock point leader Chuck Bradford of Addison earned 11 segment points (sixth, fourth, first) to take the runner-up position, and Orwell’s Lacey Hanson was fifth.
Chris LaVair of Gabriels, N.Y., was taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center after a head-on collision with a retaining wall in the first Mini Stock segment, but was released with soreness but no other injuries and was planning to compete on Saturday night at Airborne Park Speedway.
A short field in the Renegade division meant two 10-lap segments for the main event. Donahue, of Graniteville, prevailed for the second straight week.
