Nourishing meals are free for kids

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School officials wanted to be sure families knew about the new summer lunch program that started June 23. Through the Middlebury Nourishes Program, everyone ages 2 through 18 is invited to come have lunch for free at the Middlebury Recreation Park between noon and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.
To get a flavor of what the meals are like, they said last week’s menus included chili, rice and cornbread on Wednesday; pizza on Thursday; and a choice of chicken salad wrap or sunbutter and jam on Friday. Sunbutter is a sunflower seed spread that doesn’t use nuts. A grilled cheese sandwich is always available as an alternative, as well as gluten-free and vegetarian alternatives. Lunch includes fruit, vegetable and milk.
Menus going forward will be posted on the Mary Hogan website at maryhoganschool.org.
“The more who join us, the better,” said Mary Hogan School administrator Mary Longey. “This program is free for children from any family, no matter the income level, and no identification needed. Just show up rain or shine at the rec. fields near Mary Hogan, either under the blue canopy, or in the rec. department warming hut if the weather is bad.”
Contact the school at 388-4421 with any questions.
