Opinion: ‘Public good’ can’t be proved
Sen. Chris Bray’s recent letter (Addison Independent, June 26) clearly analyzes Vermont’s Constitution and how it is relevant to the Phase 2 Addison County Pipeline project. Our Constitution has protected Vermonters for centuries and should be allowed to continue to do so. Whether you are a “liberal” environmentalist (like me), a fiscal conservative (like me), or a passionate libertarian who believes in strong personal freedoms (also like me), your well-earned privileges are being compromised.
Vermont Gas’ insistence on bringing their product to International Paper should not be at the expense of our fellow citizens. Remember, 99 percent of that gas goes to New York and a $100,000 community fund/“bribe” does not magically make it “in the Public Good.” And the “getting to Rutland sooner” offer, should not, according to the PSB rules, be considered since Phase 3 exists only in the concept phase.
When put into historical perspective, we should all be on the same page on this one. Let’s protect those freedoms.
